Nope - there are some literally impossible things that you can't do. I couldn't - for example - become US President, no matter how hard I work(ed) at it.
Neither could I run a marathon due to physical limitations... no matter how hard I work(ed) at it.
And as a further example verging into ludicrous realms, neither could I give birth (!)
But leaving aside those (and similar) examples, yeah, I genuinely believe that the harder you work at something (the word harder could be 'smarter' to be fair) the more likely you are to achieve it.
Hmmm. I think that it's good to keep trying, but only if the goal is achievable. Otherwise you're wasting your time and energy. You have to know your capablities, and your limitations.
Of course, some limitations can be overcome if you really put your mind to it. But your chances of succeeding will be vastly improved if you stick to stuff you're already good at.
Unfortunately, life doesn't always give us what we want, no matter how badly we want it or how hard we work for it. Luck plays a huge part in everything. But it's better to keep trying than to give up. I'd rather try to get the things I want, and fail, than feel sorry for myself because the Universe doesn't just drop things into my lap.
I don't know what I would do if the Universe dropped anything into my lap. Hell, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the kid (too late!).
I keep hitting my head against this wall and finally, after my skull cracked, I wonder if I can overcome. I'm challenging the notion that I can do anything I set my mind to.
While I work hard and love to learn, I know I will probably never venture out of my stockroom office for a better job, unless it also involves sitting in my own office and not having to supervise or manage people. My introversion will always keep me from attaining higher career goals. Thus, I must remain content with where I am, even though I constantly see stupid, slutty, assholey, lazy dickheads in higher paying jobs, and they got those jobs because of who they know, or because they suck a dick well.

Physical limitations aside...
Okay. Please allow me to pick your brain: how do you know when to apply "working harder/smarter" and when to know your limits?

Put it this way, how will you know if you can do it unless you try? And if you don't try, you'll always wonder if you let yourself down.
