R.I.P Hamster Huey...

Feb 20, 2008 20:53

So, earlier, I noticed when I went to feed and water Hamster Huey, that he didn't come out of his coconut house when I poured the food in. So I lifted it up, fearing the worst, since he is over 2 yrs old, to find him still alive but barely. He was breathing regularly, but his eyes were shut, and he felt cold and his skin was sagging. So I ( Read more... )

Your icon almost made me cry, that hamster is the spitting image of hamster Huey...but I do love it!

The oddest thing of all, is that he is still breathing. He is limp, his eyes are drying out, but every 5 or 6 minutes, he will take a breath. I'm not imagining it either, because they are big gasping breaths too. So I am dropping saline solution that I got for another hamster's dry eye in his eyes to keep him comfortable. If I had known at 2pm that he was going to hold on this long, I would have ran him to the vet's down the street for a quick shot. :-( I don't think he is in pain though, he's totally unresponsive, so I think he is beyond that. The occasional droppers of warm water I keep trying to give him just dribble back out. poor guy.

Spooky is sitting vigil in front of his cage, staring into it, looking for him. The gerbil's cage is right over it, and normally he stares down the gerbil, especially when he is active, but he is keeping his eyes peeled for hamster huey. :-(

ty hun. He was old, and led a good, full life. But now I have zero hamsters, which is so strange for me, I have always had at least 1 or 2 hamsters, if not more, for the past 8 years now. I know of a lady who needs someone to adopt 2 dwarfies, so perhaps I will do that this weekend. I miss having dwarfies around anyway.

They are both really upset today and missing Hamster Huey. He was a family member to them, just like the bunny is. They never took a shine to the gerbils though, who just aren't personable like hamsters are.
