So, earlier, I noticed when I went to feed and water Hamster Huey, that he didn't come out of his coconut house when I poured the food in. So I lifted it up, fearing the worst, since he is over 2 yrs old, to find him still alive but barely. He was breathing regularly, but his eyes were shut, and he felt cold and his skin was sagging. So I administered some last minute meds from the vet with a dropper, to keep him hydrated, and wrapped him up in a little blankie and held him by me to warm him up. He would stir every so often, and try to crawl away, so I figured he needed undisturbed rest. I knew that he wasn't going to get better, so I made him a little bed out of a dish and some linen napkins, and put him high up on the counter, covered up, so he could get rest, undisturbed by the cats.
They knew he was sick when I was holding him, and were interested in sniffing him and meowing at me, but that's about it. They never saw me put his convelescence bed up on the high counter.
Fast Forward a few hours later, I woke up from a brief doze on the couch, and went to check on him, only to find the bed tipped over, and no hamster. Thinking, oh god, the cats must have knocked him off and hurt him worse, I started looking for him where the cats were, which was spooning in their cat bed, lol.
I noticed a tuft of golden fur between them, and Buttons licking it. Thinking I was going to see blood next, I grabbed Buttons and started yelling, only to find Hamster Huey still breathing, but warm this time. Somehow they found him up there, and Spooky must have picked him up in his mouth and brought him over to the bed, so they could huddle over him and keep him warm, they knew he was sick, and meowed at me incessantly. I have him on my lap now, and they are pawing at me trying to "tell me something", but I am afraid Huey might have taken his last breath a few mins ago. Nevertheless, I thought it was very sweet that the cats tried to warm him up and help him. Which is very odd, since they mess with the gerbils so much.
Poor Hamster Huey, RIP
