Summary
What can you do when you fall in love with someone that is out of your reach, someone as distant and brilliant as the stars?  Can one dare to
dream? Singer, dancer, actor, newscaster, model.  Idol, to put it simply.  But behind Sakurai Sho’s public image is a sincere, dorky,
passionate man.  Few people get to see a real glimpse of the person behind the lights, except for what he chooses to display.

Friends, sure, but love?  That’s impossible, according to the intelligent, beautiful and humble Kaori, a medical school student who doesn’t realize how much she can accomplish.  But maybe, just maybe, she’s exactly what Sakurai Sho needs.

With shaking hands, Kaori flipped through the calendar for the third time and muttered that it couldn’t be true.  Surely she was miscalculating.  In both fear and wonder, she clasped her abdomen to see if its volume had changed in the slightest.  She scurried to the full length mirror and lifted up her shirt.  Maybe the slight bulge above her belt was just from the juice she’d drank.  Finally, she looked herself in the face - was she glowing?  Did she look like someone who was ready?

The fluttering in her chest told her yes.

“-Kaori, we should leave in 5 minutes!” Sho’s deep voice carried from the hallway.  He popped his head in the door just as his wife frantically pulled her shirt back down.  “Eh, you aren’t ready yet?”

Quickly masking her excitement, she insisted she would be out in a second.

...  For some reason, their pettiest arguments often took place in the car.

“You just said to make your favorite Italian dish!” Kaori defended.

“I could have sworn that I told you - no cheese.  My uncle is lactose intolerant.” Sho bickered.

“Look, I’m sorry, okay?  Next time when we visit my family, you can cook.”

He let out a long sigh.  “I’ve been meaning to tell you…  I’ve been scheduled for a lot of traveling within the next couple of weeks.  So - I probably can’t make any more get togethers for awhile.”

“But you haven’t seen mine even once since the wedding.”

“You know how hard it is to take time off to fly all the way to Okinawa for a weekend.”

“What is it for?”

“Drama publicity and the news… and Satake-san also discussed possibly having my own variety show.”

“Suge!  Omedettou…”  Kaori blinked in confused happiness despite her frustration.  “Where will you be?”

“Everywhere from Sapporo to Bangkok.”

She grew very quiet and stared out at the passing scenery in deep thought.  Out of nowhere it began to pour and Sho slowed the car down safely.

“What is it?”

“…  This is going to last for more than a few weeks, isn’t it?” she murmured uncertainly.  Suddenly, all her built-up hopes seemed to be much too burdensome.

“Gomen, ne.” he softened as well.

“Iye, iye,” Kaori brightened, forcing back the lump in her throat as she chastised herself for being selfish again.  “This is pretty amazing for you!  Ganbatte, ne!  What’s the concept?”

Sho noticed a sharp glint in her eyes, but decided to leave it be.

Despite the intimidating conglomeration of educated professionals, the small Sakurai extended family dinner was a typical one.  The men debated the economy over some drinks, and their young boys furiously battled each other over a video game in the living room.  Instead of sitting in a contemplative circle with the women, Kaori was crammed in the powder room with Sho’s second cousin, and the woman’s little son of three, who had apparently eaten something that disagreed with his stomach.  It certainly wasn’t a pleasant sight (or smell) but Kaori patiently let the toddler’s symptoms ‘take their course’ while she calmed down the new mother and explained about electrolytes.

The mother insisted that she would make a quick stop at the store for a pediatric hydration drink, which left the son in Kaori’s care.  In a maternal fashion, Kaori cradled the boy on her hip and slowly ambled around the house to soothe the boy’s misery.  Although they had been amicably keeping their distance the entire dinner, Sho approached them warmly.

“How is Hayato-chan doing?”

“He’ll be a lot better by tomorrow; he just needs to rest.”  To Kaori’s surprise, Sho began coddling his little nephew.

“Hayato-chan is all pooped out, huh?” he cooed, squeezing his chubby feet.

Unamused, Hayato whined and buried his face in Kaori’s breast.  Kaori laughed along with her rejected husband.

Without warning, a brilliant flash of lightning shot through the inky sky; three seconds later, an enormous boom reverberated through space, and the entire house flickered and went dark.  Startled shouts from the adults and confused screams from the kids (who were mainly furious that their video game progress had been lost) bounced off the walls.  Instinctively, Sakurai Sho protectively shielded Kaori and the child with his own body and guided them safely to where everyone else was gathered.

All the commotion disturbed Hayato even more and he let out a high pitch wail, shocking Kaori - how could such a violent noise come from such a small body?  While the other adults scrambled around to find flashlights and candles, Sho stayed and tried to help her calm down the child.  Both woman and toddler stared at the idol’s funny faces.

“Are your arms tired?  I can carry him.”  Quite naturally, Sho hoisted the child into his lap and patted his soft head.

With a tender smile, Kaori found her imagination wandering once more in an unwise direction.  The man by her side would make a wonderful father.

Carefully turning the key in the door, Sakurai Sho struggled to push all the foreign gifts he had bought on his on-location filming trip through the front entrance.  He silently set his giant suitcase down and looked around with a goofy smile, thinking of the best way to arrange everything to surprise Kaori.  Flowers on the table, or the counter?  There were gourmet truffles and exotic bracelets too.

As Sho tip-toed into their master suite, a curious noise came from the bathroom.  He paused - it didn’t quite right, almost like a whimper.  The door swung open and out walked Kaori with a red, tortured expression.  She froze, wide-eyed, and futilely tried hiding her grief.

“Wh-what are you - I thought you weren’t arriving till-“

“Yabai.”  Sho rushed to her but she backed away.  “Why are you crying, Kaori?”

“Forget about it - it’s…”

“Don’t do this, it’s obviously something.”  He led her to sit down on the bed.  “Tell me.”

With a shuddering breath, she finally relented, “My period came.”

He tried not to chortle uncomfortably.  “Ahno, isn’t that normal?”  But then he thought for a moment.  “Oh…  OH.”  It was as if a brick had knocked him in the gut.  His furrowed gaze wandered down to her stomach, then straight in her watery eyes.  “Y-you aren’t…?”

“No I’m not, don’t - don’t worry,” she tried to smile between hiccups.  “It’s okay.  A r-relief, really.”

Sho’s countenance grim expression intensified.  “What do you mean, ‘a relief’?”

Kaori couldn’t meet his gaze.  “If we had a baby now, it would interfere with your new plans.  You wouldn’t be able to concentrate on Ima, Kono Kao Ga Sugoi - it might even get canceled.”

“Chotto matte-“

“Dai-daijoubu yo.” she swallowed, for everything she was saying felt like a lie.  “We can be more careful from now on, ne…”

“Look at me.”  He cupped her chin and made her face him.  “You wanted to be pregnant, didn’t you?  You believed you were for awhile?” he slowly asked.  Her shrug admitted, yes.  “But you thought it would - be bad for me, so that’s why you were acting weird before?”  Finally, the woman bit her lip and bobbed her head, yes.  Sho let out a prolonged, jittery breath, hung his head in his hands, and did not utter a word for a whole minute.

“… Are you mad?” Kaori piped up despondently.

“Why would I be mad?!” he burst before correcting himself.  “No, I’m not.  I just wish you had told me sooner.”  He determinedly took her hands in his, wanting to make her feel how much he really did love her.  “Kaori, you know that I’ve always wanted kids, a big family…  You know that.  If it were to even start now, I would be absolutely ecstatic!  Never in a thousand years would I give up that opportunity, that kind of life, for my job.  No awards, prestigious offers, nor responsibilities, are worth more than us.  Got it?”

“Nn…” Kaori choked on her relief, and with a little snicker, pecked him on the lips.  “We’re going to make awesome parents one day.”

“Want to make ‘one day’ come a little sooner?” he hinted, kissing her longingly.

“But Sho - at this stage of my cycle, fertilization is next to impossible-“

“Minor details…” Sho brushed off with a grin.
