During the filming break after the introductory scene, Ninomiya Kazunari strolled around cooling himself down with a paper fan; that summer evening was too warm to be wearing a suit.  A nod from him was enough to please the fans that waved loyally from the perimeter.  What he was looking for he wasn’t quite sure of, but then he spotted his co-star at the vending machines and gravitated towards her.

“Otsukare~” he greeted, fanning her lightly.

“Otsukare sama deshita.” Shimada Yuri replied formally as she inserted some coins into the slot.  Small talk was all that she could muster up; for some reason, she felt flustered around him.  “The set is really amazing, ne?  They put in a lot of detail.”

“Nn, very convincing.”

Nino didn’t like this distance between them, so he decided to close it.  As her finger slowly reached to the left, he quickly pressed the button for an iced latte.

“EH?  Nande?” Yuri exclaimed with incredulity as she heard the thud of the delivered product at the bottom of the machine.

“Oh I’m sorry, this one came out!”  The troublemaker picked the can from the dispenser and held it out innocently.  “Here you go.”

“N-no, I was going to get barley tea!”

“Jya in that case, I’ll have it.  Shouldn’t waste, ne.”  He popped the tab and gauged her reaction as he walked off mid-sip.

“Oi, you owe me!” Yuri - finally a little rude - called after him.  “Araso?”  Seemed like her Korean came out when she was irritated.

“Hai, hai…!”  The man smirked and held up a peace sign without looking back.

Within their first 30 seconds of meeting, Kazuhide had gravely insulted the girl he was supposed to impress.  “…  Yabai.” he paled.  Once the damage had been done, his calculating parents dragged him away from the greeting line as quickly as possible.

“Ridiculous!” his father hissed.  “Of all the things you could have said…!”

“ ‘He doesn’t look too bad for a dead guy’ ?!” his mother smacked him in the back of the head.

“I know, I know - it was stupid!” Kazuhide groaned.  His stomach knotted as he remembered Yuri’s look of hurt and dismay.  With a deep breath, he announced, “Yosh, I’m going back.”

It was audacious he recognized, but he still fidgeted nervously and waited in hopes that he could regain some ground.  While shuffling along with the slow crowd once more, he craned his head to only see Yukino biting her lip painfully, perhaps trying not to cry.  Finally, he stood in front of downcast Yukino for the second time.

“That was REALLY rude of me-“ he began, only to be cut off with a scathing scowl from the girl.

“Seriously…?” she muttered with closed eyes.

“I didn’t mean to insult you.”

“No, you simply insulted my father who is--”  She grit her teeth.  “Nevermind.”

“I was just trying to err - make you laugh.”

She sneered sarcastically, “Yes, well that was certainly clever.  I feel much more lighthearted now.”

Kazuhide hadn’t expected her to be capable of being so sharp; his mouth opened and closed dumbly like a goldfish.  “Sh-shitsure shimasu…”  He panicked and marched away but as he glanced back, he took note of Sugase Fumitaka’s portrait once again.  A realization overcame him as he stared at the loving photograph: for the old man’s sake, he would make it up to the daughter, even if all he could give was a kind word.

Bracing his shoulders, he boldly cut the line and faced Yuri for the third time.  Other guests quizzically skipped over the pair creating a jam in the pace.

“You’re unbelievable…”

“Please listen for one second.” he rapidly begged.  “I’m going to say this really quickly, since you’re probably going to kick me out after this.  I did meet your father once a couple years ago, when he visited my father’s office, and what I remember the most was how much Sugase-san talked about his smart, talented daughter.  He was SO proud of you, Yukino-san, and I think he would definitely want you to know that… in case you didn’t already.”

The young woman gaped at him silently, anger slowly deflating in her almond eyes.

Sugase Chiasa glanced up uncertainly at this tense encounter between her daughter and this strange boy.  It wasn’t the proper time for such petty arguing. “Nomura-kun, maybe you should go and find your parents…” the widow suggested wearily.

Kazuhide nodded grimly and bowed very low.  “Excuse me.”

The actors were called to the director’s seat to go over the film captures thus far.  Yuri diligently peered over at the small screen behind director Hisamatsu’s shoulder and listened to his opinions on the route they should proceed on.

“Sugase-san, when he leads you out, look at him dubiously.  And Ninomiya-san, he’ll…”  While the others were in serious discussion, Yuri glanced over to see her co-star Ninomiya hunched in a corner, thumbs furiously clicking and nose inches away from his Nintendo DS.  For some reason, no one else seemed to mind him playing his games in the middle of their collaboration either.

Just like her character, Yuri silently scoffed.  What was with this guy’s attitude?  Was he that rude and arrogant as to not even pretend to pay attention?  Did his idol status give him such leniency?

Very soon, however, she witnessed the truth of the matter: somehow, uncannily, Ninomiya didn’t miss a beat and followed every single instruction flawlessly.

It seemed like Kazuhide’s failure had hit him much harder than he would have expected; he forlornly picked at his finger food as he stood with his small-talking parents and their acquaintances at the adjacent reception foyer.  Perhaps for a split moment upon finally meeting Yukino, he had actually been eager to possibly be someone she’d think about from time to time.

He noticed his parents gawk in his direction, before a quiet voice behind him murmured, “Ahno, Nomura-san…?”

Suddenly, he couldn’t fight his expectant smile.  “Yukino-san!”

Apart from the social circle of adults, Yukino took a deep breath.  “I - I apologize for being angry with you earlier.  It wasn’t fair.”

“Iye, don’t be sorry!” he waved off.

“Also…  I really appreciated the last thing you said.”  She stared down at her feet again.  “Ever since - it happened - everyone has just pitied me, but your story helped me remember my father in a happy way.  So… thank you.”

In their small bubble of quiet, it was now apparent how much of a struggle it was for Yukino to even keep her shoulders up.  Kazuhide’s chest swelled and - not because of parental pressure, but from an innate sense that he was now responsible - he leaned in and asked in a caring voice, “You know what will help?  Let’s leave, just for a little while.”

“Eh?  Leave the funeral?” Yukino blanched.

“Yes, you’ve probably been surrounded by all this depressing business for days.  Get away from this atmosphere, take a breather.  What do you say?”

The cameras followed the two actors out the doors.  It had grown dark since they began filming, and Yuri breathed in the delicious wave of fresh night air; her wooden clogs quietly clacked against the stone cobbled paths of the old town.  Two slow crystal tears trickled from her eyes.  Ninomiya seemed to stay in character and uttered his next line.

“I’m sorry, I asked you out here and I don’t even know what to say.”  In reality, a dozen questions came to mind, and he wondered if he would ever know the answers.  He awkwardly ruffled the hair on the back of his head.

Shaking off bleak memories of the past like smog, Yuri forgot what Sugase Yukino’s reply was supposed to be, and instead spoke from her own mind.  “It’s okay.  For some reason… I feel a little better already.”

“--  Etto, CUT!” Ushiba-san yelled from the gaggle of staff.  In the back, Ushiba and Hisamatsu began debating with Nomura.

“Kuu~ My mistake.  Gomen.” Yuri threw her arms out with a yawn.

“We were on a roll, too.” Nino chuckled, copying her stretches.  “At least it’s a really nice night.  I could stay out here for awhile…”

“--  Nevermind, that scene is a keep!” the directors called.  “We're finished for tonight - otsukare sama deshita!”

Everyone was saying their goodbyes and collecting their things to go home for the evening.  Nino lingered around, checking his cell phone messages slowly as he watched Yuri from his periphery.  She was conversing animatedly with the other actors, and as he had hoped, she eventually fell away from the crowd.
“Yosh…  That was a successful crank-in, ne?” Nino began brightly.  “Do you have any other plans after this?”

“I’m going out for a meal with some of the other actors.  Are you?  They said they invited you earlier.”

Nino nodded firmly, hiding his letdown.  “Ah yeah, they asked me, but I think I’ll just head back to the apartment tonight…”

Hesitantly keeping her voice passive, Yuri admitted, “Too bad.”

“I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow anyway.”

“Of course, you’re an in-demand top idol.” she beamed.  “Get some rest then.”
