Chapter 07: Canon in D
A mere two months only after school started, the Angels had already brought down enough girls to fit the entire school. Most of their targets were outside school because the girls in their school were boring them out. It was the start of another lazy morning and the Nakajima was in the greenhouse, staring into thin air and humming a tune.
The greenhouse was a place that only The Angels were allowed into but it was mostly Nakajima Yuto who used it. It was named the White Garden because of all the white roses within the garden. Up till now, no girl has set foot within the White Garden and it was a special place to Yuto.

“Kanon-Sama,” Misaki called out to his mistress, “I went shopping the other day and I saw this necklace. I thought that it might suit you so I bought it for you. Please accept this gift.”
“You bought it along with Ume?” Kanon asked cautiously, afraid to burst the delicate bubble between her and Misaki, “Arigatou ne, Misaki.”
“Kanon-Sama… I noticed that you haven’t been talking much to your friends lately.” Misaki stated, concerned about her situation. While he has become more talkative and happier ever since going out with Ume, Kanon was just the opposite without him.
“I didn’t have any friends to start off with so it’s alright with me, Misaki.”
A pang of guilt hit Misaki and he stared at Ume who was, like always, with the rest of the popular girls in the class while Kanon remained seated alone. “Kanon!” Saki called out to her twin, panting after running down the hallways, “Kanon, come over here!! Hurry…!” she tugged her twin out of the seat and pulled her down the many stairs and outside the café’s notice board, “You’re the pianist for tomorrow!”
“But… but how can that be? I didn’t volunteer!” Kanon stammered and was confused by the sudden news that just hit her.
“Oh, you don’t have to volunteer~” Mai sneered from above with her arms crossed, with half of her bodice leaning onto the support of the second level, “we can always volunteer you! It was decided during yesterday’s meeting!”
“Misaki, you knew all about it didn’t you…” Saki muttered at Misaki in disappointment who just stared at the marble flooring without saying anything else.
“Don’t blame it on him!” Ume snarled from above like a protective tigress and pursed her lips unwillingly, “it wasn’t his fault to start off with. He is not even a part of the student council.”
“It’s alright, Saki!” Kanon let out a burst of anger all of a sudden and took a step forward, looking at the girls straight in the eyes for the first time ever, “If they want to hear me play so much, then I’ll just do them a favour and play for them!”
Then, without a second thought, Kanon stormed out of the cafeteria and into the backyard of the school. Her rosy cheeks were sticky with tears when Saki found her in the corner of the ice rink. Kanon hiccupped like a little kid and stuttered, “I don’t like to play the piano in front of so many people! Not after Mai embarrassed me in elementary school!”
“I could play it instead of you!” Saki suggested hopefully and grasped her twin’s hands tightly with her own, “I’m not as good but I’ll try my best!”
“Sakiko, it’s no use.” Kanon looked into her sister’s eyes and her heart dropped even further, “the piece that they chose… it’s Canon in D. They must’ve chosen it for a reason… and whatever this reason is, I’m sure it’s not going to be good.”
“I don’t care! I’m the older one! I get to decide what’s the best for the both of us! I’m going to perform tomorrow and there’s no room for negotiation!” Saki shouted and shook her head wildly, “I can pretend to be you, Kanon… then you can pretend to be me just for tomorrow!”
“Saki… don’t be a fool. Let’s just… let’s just leave things the way they are ok? What’s going to happen will happen eventually.”

“Aoi, are you Yamada-San’s new girlfriend?” Saki asked curiously after taking a look at Aoi’s wallpaper on her cell phone.
Aoi snatched the phone over and snapped it frantically, going red with embarrassment. “N-No…” Aoi stammered and admitted that she had photo-shopped that wallpaper seen earlier on because she likes Yamada Ryosuke and not because she is his new girlfriend.
“Ah… so you like someone!!! Finally~ after such a long time!” Saki tried to be funny that morning, tickling her best friend with Kanon giggling away beside the two of them, “but then why do you like one of those Angels? Aren’t they… kind of hard to get?”
“But if I’m willing to try, I’m sure anything can happen!” Aoi replied confidently and stuck out her chest while Kanon clapped in admiration, “thank you thank you~” Aoi waved to her imaginary audience.
However, how much Kanon tried to smile in front of her mirror image, she still felt anxious towards the lunchtime performance later on.

It has always been in the school’s tradition starting from the 5 years ago, for a student to perform a solo piece in the cafeteria during the lunch time of the school. The performance would be broadcasted throughout the entire campus so the entire school would be listening or viewing the performance via the flat-screen television hung at the concourse of the school.
The Angels entered the cafeteria with their usual pace while Kanon gripped onto the papers of the piece timidly, biting her lower lip as the Angels walked pass her and sat at their usual spot behind the glass doors. “You may begin.” Chinen signalled before taking his sit along with the rest of the student body in the cafeteria.
With her heart in her mouth, Kanon sat down and carefully laid the piece on the piano, shifting to make herself comfortable on the cushioned seat. “Who is she?” Keito whispered curiously, “I’ve never seen her around.”
“I don’t know.” Ryosuke replied uninterestedly, not wanting to look at Kanon, “Perhaps some weird girl who always sneaks around the school unnoticed. I don’t care about such people anyway.”
Kanon’s nimble fingers settled onto the white keys of the 3-legged piano sitting on the slightly raised platform and the moment she pushed the first note, Chinen’s attention switched back to her immediately. Then, when the second note was played, Ryutaro looked worriedly at his best friend, sensing that something bad was going to happen. As the notes go on, one Angel’s face was getting darker and the scowl was getting harder as the song continued. To him, the melody of Canon seemed like thunder howling in his dreams and a faraway lullaby that he wants to forget so badly! In the midst of his fury, he took the pail of dirty water that was left forgotten by the cleaner and hurled it in Kanon’s direction!
Everyone gasped in astonishment and backed away with fright while Yamada glared at Kanon, his heart hammering against his ribcage. Sakiko wanted to rush over to her twin’s aid but was stopped by Mai and the other girls belonging to the student council. “Yama-!” Misaki wanted to shout but Ume pulled him back, shaking her head a little.
Misaki then took a step backwards to stand beside Ume, staring at the scene in front of him. Kanon was drenched with her head hanging low. Her long hair clung to her at the sides of her face with the dirty water dripping from it, her fingers still on the keys of the piano. “Who told you to play this piece?” Ryosuke spoke through gritted teeth at first, “WHO WAS IT!?” he hollered louder when he failed to hear her reply and he threw the now-empty bucket in her direction, missing her by a mere inch.
“Yamada-Sama, I’m terribly sorry about this.” Mai stood out to speak on behalf of Kanon and tried to look apologetic in front of the audience, “We told her to not pick it but she insisted.”
“You liar!” Sakiko screamed from behind the group of student leaders and pushed through them with Kento’s help, “You were the one who set Kanon up to this!”
“Kento…” Yuto whispered and set his cup of tea gently onto its matching saucer.
“Isn’t this ENOUGH for one day, Sakiko-San!?” Mai shouted in her glass-like voice that pierced through the eerie silence of the cafeteria, “Your failure to keep silent when the student leaders are talking has disappointed me, Sakiko-San. This will not be tolerated in the future!”
“She is not obligated to listen to you!” Kento protected his mistress by shielding her, “Everyone is this school has their right to speak!”
“Nakajima Kento!” Mai shrieked, still not getting out of her lady-like stance, “You are just her servant. You have no right to talk in here.”
“I’m not interested in this unruly talk.” Yamada’s cold voice interrupted their fight as he glared at Kanon who still refused to reveal her face in front of the crowd, “Get this stinky lasso out of here. I don’t want to see her touching the pianos in our school ever again.” He ordered.
“Nani kore…?” Saki muttered with a horrified expression, unable to tear her eyes from the angered Angel, “Kanon! Ikou…!” she called out to her twin and pulled Kanon out of the cafeteria just as Yuto got up to follow Kento’s back view.

“Kento.” Yuto knocked gently on the health room and mentioned for his brother to come out. “Is that your mistress too? The girl that has angered Ryosuke…”
“Whether she is my mistress or not is none of your business!” Kento shouted and wanted to re-enter the room but halted when Yuto crossed his arms and said, “She has angered Ryosuke…! Do you think he’ll let her off so easily?”
Yuto sniffed and smirked at his younger brother who had a look of surprise painted on his face. Yuto then leaned against the wall in his casual stance and tucked his hands into the pockets of his black trousers, “So…” he wondered, staring into space, “What are you going to do about it?”
“I…” Kento muttered, stumped for a moment but refusing to admit defeat, he let out an exasperated sigh and rolled his eyes with his back still facing his older brother, “I will solve it in my own way! You don’t have to know!”
Before Yuto could say another word, Kento went back into the health room to take a look at his two mistresses. Just shortly after Kento entered the health room, Misaki appeared and stopped when he saw Yuto standing just beside the door. “Ah, konnichiwa, Takahata-San.” Yuto stood upright and smiled at the surprised Misaki who was still staring at the Angel, “thank you for always taking care of Kento.”
“Please don’t say that, Nakajima-Sama.” Misaki replied awkwardly to the boy who was superior to him, “Kento took care of me as well.”
“Really!?” Yuto scoffed and his smile widened, “sad to say that you haven’t been returning his kindness then. Well, I guess that Kento is really different from me.”
Misaki was left confused and gulity for a moment as he stared blankly at Yuto who just continued to smile at Misaki before walking past him without saying a proper goodbye.
