Chapter 05: The Second Victim

“Mama,” Kanon whined uncomfortably, “Can we not go to the ball…?”

“Yeah, I don’t feel like going either…” Saki joined in, trying to beg their mother to let them stay at home, “We can stay at home and accompany you, mama.”

“I don’t need the both of you around right now.” Keiko smiled at her twins lovingly and touched their rosy cheeks that highlighted their cheekbones, “I have some work to do.”

“Sakiko-Sama, Kanon-Sama…” Kento prompted them urgently but calmly, “We have to go now, we are running late.”

“Now… go have some fun now~” Keiko pushed them into the car and reminded the two, “But don’t be home too late alright? I’ll be missing you.”

The party was getting boring as the couples on the dance floor came and went, the shadows dancing along with the music in a messy heap. Yamada sat at the corner that was especially reserved for the five Angels as he stared at the many couples swaying away in front of him and placed his chin on the back of his palm, bored.

They remind me of some students that I don’t wish to think of… Kusanagi thought, terrified as he continued to wipe away the beads of cold sweat that covered his neck and drenched the back of his expensive suit, and yet they are too beautiful to be them… but then again… the Akumas were beautiful as well…

While Kusanagi continued to terrorize himself in his mind with thoughts of the Akumas, Yuto who got bored with Michiyo who hung onto him like a koala on a tree, signalled for Yamada to let the boyfriend into the campus while he led her to the school’s garden, where the fountain continued its dance.

Within seconds, a scream was heard from the outside and Chinen’s bored face lit up with a smile immediately as the four Angels rushed outside to see what the commotion was about. Keito had to stifle a laughter when he caught sight of a soaked Michiyo who stood in the knee-length water of the pond with her face scrunched up in disgust. “Why did you lie to me…?” Yuto asked in a soft mutter as the crowd around them gasped in horror, “You have a boyfriend right…? Why did you still agree to be my date!?”

“It’s… It’s not true! I broke up with him a few days ago!!!” Michiyo screamed innocently at the Angel staring straight back at her,

“Honest!!!”

“Whoa, Michiyo-Chan… I didn’t know that you’re a two-timer.” Someone in the crowd scoffed arrogantly, “You don’t deserve to be with Nakajima-Sama.”

“Yeah… he’s too good for you!” another girl fired before the crowd left the crime scene, leaving only the Angels standing there with their arms folded, victorious.

“Thank you, Nakajima-San; I’ve wanted to get back at her.” The ex-boyfriend thanked him, full of gratitude, “she’s been looking down on me ever since we got together… irritating lass.”

“I never said anything about helping you.” Yuto turned to him coldly, “it was all for the sake of having fun.”

After the sudden appearance and exit of the ex-boyfriend, Michiyo stood still in the pond, her mouth opening and shutting like it will never end. “Are you a fish?” Chinen broke out into a hearty laughter after suppressing it for so long, “you look funny!!”

“What!?” Michiyo scoffed in disbelief, gritting her teeth and glaring at the Angels, “I’m more than good enough for any of you guys standing there! I’m a teen model that every magazine yearns to have on their cover page!”

“I’m sorry but that will change soon enough.” Keito shrugged while Ryutaro continued to smile at the drenched haughty princess who slapped the surface and growled in annoyance as she swatted a spray of hair away from her beautiful face.

“What!?” she scoffed and pointed at herself arrogantly, still refusing to believe it, “I’m the top teen model! ME!”

“You’re the top model from the bottom.” Yamada muttered softly while Yuto smirked, very much entertained.

“Who are you to say that!?” Michiyo took off her necklace and bracelets angrily and stepped out of the water but got pushed back by Yuto instead. She ended up spluttering in a mess of mud and uprooted plants while the Angels laughed, enjoying totally.

“Let me tell you who I really am…” Yuto bent down to look at her at eye level before the kindness in his eyes disappeared and he muttered coldly, “Watashi wa… Akuma desu.”

“A-Akuma…?” Michiyo mumbled, confused as the five guys waved goodbye and left her alone in the pond while the sudden raindrops coloured the rest of her night, “Akuma… they are… Akumas…”

The downpour was sudden and silent as the twins sat outside the great hall, enjoying the soft pitter-patter of the raindrops. The twins continued to daydream as the orchestra played on inside the great hall. Kanon pulled the shawl tighter around her and Saki immediately told Misaki, “Misaki, Kanon is cold.”

Misaki nodded and took the hint to take off his coat and draped it over Kanon’s shoulders, “Arigatou.” Kanon replied shyly and continued to stare at Misaki who took a step back to his original stance while Saki observed her twin silently, pursing her lips.

“Kanon…” Saki whispered beside Kanon’s ear playfully, “Do you… want to have a dance with Misaki before going off?”

Kanon looked at her twin before turning back to look at Misaki and then back again at Saki who continued to stare at Kanon carefully, observing her every movement, “I don’t think so.” Kanon replied with a worried look on her face, “He’s looking at Ume. It’ll not be nice.”

Kanon sighed while Sakiko remained silent for a few more seconds, listening to the song of the night and humming a soothing tune. “Saki… I’m going to the ice skating-rink for a moment.”

“Do you want me to accompany you?”

“No, I’ll be fine with just Misaki.” Kanon reassured her and smiled at Kento to take good care of her twin as Misaki opened the umbrella and guided her along the lighted pathway and towards the rink.

After changing into her skates and skating a few rounds in the rink, Kanon decided to take a breather while sitting beside Misaki. “Misaki…” Kanon trembled nervously, “I want you to go look for Ume.” She said after much rehearsing within her brain, “I… I want you to… be her partner for tonight.”

“Kanon-Sama…”

“I… want to try to move away from you.” Kanon said while trying to blink back her tears, “I want to learn to live without you. I… I don’t like you anymore… so, you can… you can now go look for Ume.”

Misaki was about to say something else when Kanon interrupted him with a brave smile with a necklace dangling from her fingers and in front of Misaki’s eyes, “Ume… wanted me to show you this. She said… that she hasn’t forgotten about the promise you made to her two years ago.”

Without another word, Misaki grabbed the necklace and dashed out of the rink, failing to care about the feelings that Kanon had suppressed so much. Kanon’s boiling tears came out the instant that she heard the door slam shut and she bit her lips together to form a tight smile, “Daijyobu, Kanon… you’re going to be alright all alone.”

Finally, she mustered up enough courage to throw away the skates that Misaki had given her. “You were the one who taught me how to skate… and now… I’m leaving you here. This is the end.” Kanon tried to whisper in her shaky voice, her lips trembling hardly as if they did not belong to her.

She stood in the middle of the rink, barefooted and cold, taking one last longing look at her things before she left. Little did she know that, just as she left, someone else entered the rink…

“Wait a moment!” Someone shouted across the back garden of the school, mentioning for the slim girl who was walking towards the back gate to stop, “Wait!”

Drenched by the downpour, Kanon turned around to look at the person who called for her to stop and blinked hardly from the rain. “Who are you?” she asked in a timid whisper when the dim lights failed to shine on his face.

“Ryosuke desu. Yamada Ryosuke.” The ice hockey player who had changed into his jerseys replied her as her eyes dropped down to his hands, staring at the skates that now had rain running down its blades and ignoring the name mentioned by the handsome guy even though she found it familiar, “This belongs to you right?” he asked, breaking her fixed stare and showing her the skates that hung onto his fingers, “You left them in the rink.”

Kanon clamped her lips shut in front of the strangers, tears welling up in her eyes when she realize that her mouth just refuses to open without Misaki by her side. Yappari… I still can’t do without him. She thought desperately as shame and disappointment shadowed her. “Hello…?” Yamada tried to get a reply from the girl in front of him, whose tears were hidden by the drops of rain with her head hung low.

He sighed and pushed the skates into her hands, “I don’t know what reason you’ve got… but whatever you do, you shouldn’t leave those behind if you’re a skater.”

Kanon dropped the skates onto the concrete floor and Yamada watched it fall-that was when he noticed her bare feet. “If you hate these pair of skates so much…” Yamada muttered in annoyance and picked up the skates and threw it in the direction of the bed of flowers while Kanon gasped at the sudden heartless action.

Yamada then slipped out of his shoes, making a ‘tsk’ in an irritating manner after glancing at her feet and forced her feet into the oversized shoes, “Wear these shoes home. You don’t have to return it to me. I won’t want it anymore.”

After which, Kanon continued to walk out of the back gates without an umbrella, soaking her unhappiness in her rain while Yamada stared at the skates and went over to pick it up, feeling annoyed with himself. “Stupid rain…” he muttered with gritted teeth and continued to stare at the skates and then back at the gates.
