Oh well, the British people are getting what the British people want with a Hard Brexit I suppose.

Note that only 20% thought the rEU would agree to Theresa May's demands.

Also: "Remain voters tended to think it was wrong to leave the single market and were split over the customs union." You what? How can you like the single market more than the customs union? The level of illiteracy about basic European concepts continues to be staggering.

There does seem to be a staggering array of problems people think leaving the EU will magically fix.

One suspects they're going to be disappointed.

But I'm certain the politicians and the media will just continue to blame the EU for everything, even when we're not in it anymore.

OK, but these were Remain voters. And they nonetheless thought "the Single Market, with its four freedoms and common regulations and all of that stuff: yes we like it" and at the same time "the customs union that means we don't have inspections of lorries at the ports? Not too sure about that".

How? How can you think that?

0.0% of Icelanders 25 years or younger believe God created the world wildeabandon January 19 2017, 12:46:21 UTC
I'm curious about the wording of that poll, since "God created the world by means of the Big Bang" is the mainstream Christian position (at least in Europe). Given that according to the article, 42% of under 25s still identify themselves as Christian, it seems implausible that none of them hold that position.

The headline should be "0% of people believe in a literal interpretation of creation as opposed to some sort of Big Bang". The 93.9% who believe the universe was created in the Big Bang includes atheists, and also anyone who believe the Big Bang happened, but that God started it.

The source is linked to in the original article, although it's in Icelandic. It's a PDF of a Powerpoint and hard to search, but page 16 is the one to check out ( ... )

Some context for the Link article is that it's worth bearing in mind the situation now is very different to the situation in 2000 when a lot of them became free. Cash machines in a lot of areas are actually used much less than they were twenty years ago because card payments are so popular.

While there are obviously a lot of people who do still use cash machine, pay for everything in cash and will be hit really hard by charges, I suspect that's also a part of the thinking even if it's not mentioned.

Yeah - I still use cash machines, but I can always go to the local HBOS and get it free. And obviously I pay for a lot of stuff by waving my phone in its general direction. It's going to suck a lot more for poor people in badly served areas.

Two things re the Holocaust memorial

- Some friends of mine took a selfie there. No one commented, it was hard to know what to say. It was a moody selfie, but still.
- When we went there, we ended up just walking past without going amongst the blocks. It was absolutely mobbed, mostly with irreverent tour groups, people taking selfies - it was certainly not a sombre atmosphere. That said, you could come upon it and not know what it was - it's busy enough around there and easy enough to walk up to that you could just think it was some fancy art thing (and not pay attention when you hit the Tag My Location button); or alternatively it could just not mean much to you. Given that one of my old team at work genuinely assumed the world was 2016 years old because it was the year 2016, I think it's safe to say some people are just not that aware!
