I'm actually a little surprised ISIS didn't destroy the Mosul dam when they captured it. Seemed like the sort of atrocity that would be right up their street. But maybe they figured killing too many of their own people might hurt their support levels.

I remember reading about that dam years ago, before the Gulf War. And it was one of those corrupt infrastructure projects that corrupt Western companies helped build, that really should never have been built where it was built.

Segregated cycle lanes would be great, so many of the supposed cycle lanes in Dundee actually have bus stops in them or just disappear halfway along a road and in no way make me feel any safer than I would if they weren't there at all!

I'm slightly bemused by the period leave thing but maybe that's because I've only worked in universities and therefore have never encountered arseholery about taking sick leave...

The 'Should desire be curable' article lost me when it started equating love with sexual desire.

Trump actually considered running in 2012. I remember the headline when he decided not to: "The Donald Ducks."

There doesn't seem to be any reliable information, at least yet, on the "sleeping while black" story. The car was "in the street." Does that mean it was parked by the curb, or sitting out in the middle? The couple were asleep (or "unconscious", which could mean passed out - but how could anyone tell which?) when the cops arrived, but there's no indication they remained so for the whole of the "45-minute standoff." How do you hold a standoff with an unconscious person, anyway? The cops say the woman waved a gun around. Her relatives say she never owned a gun. Cops have a history of mistaking cell phones for guns. The cops say they opened fire because they felt threatened when the couple wouldn't exit the car. Perhaps the couple were no longer asleep by then, but cops are always defending shooting by saying how threatened they felt by completely non-threatening actions like this. Do cops have any idea what easily ( ... )
