I must admit, when I first became vegan I ate quite a few veggie hotdogs and was always amazed by how "real" they tasted... Oops!

That said, how much meat is there in 'real' hot dogs? :o)

Good point! There's probably more in the veggie versions ;)

I have in my hand a tin of Ye Olde Oak hot dogs:

58% chicken (mechanically separated)
10% pork

And in lower proportions, some meat byproducts:

Pork collagen
Beef collagen casing
Pork fat

I would probably tune in to "Patrick Hadfield's Turkey Time". At least occasionally.

Processed meats as bad as cigarettes: bad reporting on cartesiandaemon October 27 2015, 14:47:01 UTC
Although even in the better sort of articles, we could do with some more standard terminology for these sort of risks, the % of the base risk is not always helpful...

I wouldn't be that surprised if 2% of hot dogs are contaminated with human DNA - the meat processing industry is not particularly renowned for its excellent health and safety practices.

I am not sure the figures in that article about red meat are very good ( ... )

It is still pretty bad for you, if that's right.

And I should probably cut down my processed-meat consumption. But I love salami so much!

Mmmmm, pepperami.

Actually, I realise to my shame, I have made one cock up there. The 1 in 33 thing is the proportion of early deaths caused by such cancers not the raw probability of your early death being caused by it. Nonetheless colo-rectal cancers are a really common cause of premature death.

I can live without salami or bacon -- I am very keen on chorizo though.

How many deaths are early?
