I wonder what will happen if the pope continues to become increasingly sane.

Most likely, the Curia will make damn sure the next Pope isn't.

I suspect less people will feel they need to disassociate themselves from the church, which will slow down the rate of decline.

But once "None of the above" hits a critical mass, all of those people who were basically doing religious things to fit in will (slowly) stop, which cuts down the perceived religion level very quickly.

You want Christianity to die out completely? Even though you don't beileve in it, wouldn't its eradication be a bit sad from a cultural perspective? Do you feel the same way about Islam and other religions?

From a cultural perspective? If I may answer a question with a question in this case: "Is the eradication of Greek/Roman/Egyptian/Assyrian/Persian and lots and lots of other ancient and not so ancient religions just as sad from a cultural perspective?"

Admittedly, that is ignoring how much of those religions is still alive "from a cultural perspective" (including the way many saints took on the aspects of ancient gods.) So I daresay, from a cultural perspective, useful or interesting aspects of Christian and Islamic culture would, you know, survive. Hopefully not the most illogical ones.

I want people to believe that things are true for empirical reasons.

If people want to get together and sing hymns for cultural reasons, that's absolutely fine by me (and I've done it myself.

1) The article on the decline of Christianity reminds me of how the increase in acceptance of civil rights in the US since 1960 led folks to hope that outright racism was in terminal decline. Recently it's revealed itself to be as virulent as ever ( ... )

I never even evacuate my *office* without my coat and wallet and keys. It's just too enormously inconvenient to be stuck standing around outside without the means to do anything. I think were I on a being-evacuated plane I'd take my many-pocketed jacket but not my wheeled cabin-luggage; without money and travel documents and prescription meds I'd be totally screwed, everything else can be bought.

I've been told at 2 different offices to make sure to take my purse during drills because they've had problems of theft while the building is empty. Less of a problem with a plane but still.

In a company I used to work for, we had a fire drill and before we went back in, the fire wardens asked all the staff who had their wallet/purse etc to go in and everyone else to stay back. Those who stayed back got told they really ought to have taken the essentials since if it -was- a real fire, how would they get home if they didn't have car keys, bus fare etc.

Tai chi for preventing falls. It's surprising that a few months of tai chi can make a big difference.

Yeah, years of tai chi did wonders for my balance and I've noticed the difference for the worse now it's been 3 years since I made a class.

I meant to say thank you for this - I passed it on to a couple of people, who I thought would be interested!

Maybe there needs to be a specific category of "take this in an emergency, but not if you're actually on fire" covering small handbags, bumbags, and the like? I always carry my wallet, phone, keys and passport in my pocket because I'm scared to be parted from them for a second, though that has other problems, but there's good reason to have it on.

Of course, maybe that's what "hand baggage" was supposed to be, but people have learned you have to FILL UP the maximum hand baggage allowance, because they don't trust what they check to come back...
