Interesting take on Aliens. Hadn't really consciously thought of it that way, but it makes perfect sense and is a smart piece of writing.

It's a good piece. Not sure it's the absolute best, but it does make very good use of technology.

(And actually, plays off interestingly against Avatar, where the "good guys" all have built in USB and are clearly connected to a planet-sized supercomputer.)

Is there a James Cameron film that isn't about technology and generally the failure of technology in some way. Even Titanic is about the technology of ship building.

He does like his technology a lot.

And yeah, hubris comes in all over the place.

Just remember if you are one of the people who is going to try facesitting in your own home with your partner in support of the protest that facesitting can be a dangerous act. If you haven't tried it before spend 10 minutes reading up on it first.

If you don't want to google it here is a quick guide:

1. The danger isn't during the facesitting itself. Most facesitting deaths are heart attacks that happen roughly 20 minutes after the act is done. This is the result of airway blockage during the session.

2. Never, ever to it to the point where the person passes out.

3. Do not cover both the nose and the mouth at the same time. You can find an angle where you cover one or the other - never cover both.

4. Have a safe action in place in case you get carried away and accidentally end up covering both airways. A good one is a tap on the butt.

5. Lift off the face for a couple seconds roughly ever two minutes.

Why James Cameron’s "Aliens" is the best movie about technology cartesiandaemon December 12 2014, 12:30:10 UTC
Excellent point. It's really hard to boil ideas down to simple graphical expressions, but it's really effective when you can. If you're trying to explain an idea by writing an essay, it's already an uphill struggle. Yes, ghostbusters is exactly a startup, and because it's fairly lighthearted, it actually covers a lot of the ups and downs very well.

Fascinating. I kind of had the idea it was something like that, but had no idea.

Which goes nowhere to explaining why many a soldier from a loving family background with no sign of abuse experiences PTSD as a result of combat experience but I suppose that as a military historian, I would say that.

I'm an abuse survivor and haven't experienced PTSD although I'd admit that I buried the experience for forty years until I could finally process it.

Do you think early exposure to violence affects the odds of getting PTSD as an adult?

I'd certainly be inclined to believe it could. I worked with abused kids during a teaching career earlier in my life and I know some went on to display the sort of issues associated with PTSD.
