I do recommend stretching AFTER a workout (or every other workout; I stretch on my upper body days). If I don't stretch, I get charlie horses in my calves and muscle cramps generally.

I've always wondered what a charlie horse is - one of those things I saw in US-originating books as a kid, but had no frame of reference for. Thank goodness Wikipedia can now answer my questions!

I'm prepared to believe that stretching isn't a good preparation for vigorous exercise, and that warming up is better. I don't think that the studies cited have explored the benefits of stretching on its own, from the point of view of the health of the body generally.

I'm quite pleased this has gone mainstream - a review on google scholar before I took up running in earnest confirmed for me that my walking-as-warm-up was at least as good as stretching, despite many people telling me I must stretch. I trust to evidence-based advice.

You're right, I think - this was wrt only to stretching before exercise, not to stretching qua stretching.

It's only that people who do yoga seem to get a lot of benefit from it, and I would hate to see the media now implying that stretching is no use, and not to bother to do it, which is how messages tend to get out.
