Yeah - I think that’s a good call.

I quite enjoyed the comment under the article - being “yourself” won’t work if you are lazy.

I’m currently having the conversation about preludes to college with my 15 year old daughter. My line is if she wants to go somewhere excellent or interesting then she needs to present as excellent or interesting or at least a good fit for the ethos of the college. There’s no point turning up to art school if you can’t point to a wall full of stuff you’ve drawn or to vet school if you’ve never mucked out horses or worked really hard to wangle a summer job at the local zoo. Just liking pictures and going squee over animals isn’t going to cut the mustard. Even applying for a pretty straight academic college she probably needs to have some stuff on her CV that at least allows her to talk about herself in the past and present tense rather than just the future tense. My daughter is pretty bright. She does her homework. She’ll probably do well enough to get into a second tier university without doing anything more than turning up to school and hanging out with her mates. If she wants to go to one of the many world class institutions she’ll need to do and be a bit more than a typical teenager.

And I think she gets that.

Also, there is the bit of the conversation which I try and present a credible stance of her university entrance not being more important to me than it is to her.

Which is more for my benefit than hers I think.
