oh my god, instant coffee? My respect for the English has just dropped a notch. Maybe two.

My mother was German, but converted to tea with some ease.

Other half used to be quite a tea drinker, but he usually drinks ersatzkafee these days- we used to get it from health food shops, but now get them from Polish shops. We do have coffee (and live just up the hill from Pumphreys coffee roasters!) but it is more of an occasional treat than an everyday drink- although given how strong he makes it, it is probably just as well!

I just don't drink as much coffee as tea - and I hate the taste of coffee made with steam or boiled milk. First class coffee (Java, Kenya beans) filtered is a treat but simply not worth bothering with on a normal day.

Electric kettles?

America uses 120VAC, 60HZ, not recognizably different from what the rest of the world uses. Very few Americans use kettles - of any kind - generally prefering electric automatic drip style coffee makers. I'm an exception using an Italian stove top coffee pot or my French press.

The UK has 240VAC, which means that kettles boil _really_ quickly. It's very handy.

Coffee - isn't this because we all have kettles already and the yanks don't? I wonder if we use more instant hot chocolate too.
