Yesterday, a friend of mine wrote about meeting an author she'd long admired and how the response to her passionate enthusiasm was, essentially, dickish ( Read more... )

"When I was a child, I thought as a child. Now I am an adult, I can afford the cool stuff. And I'm pretty passionate about it." I love this.

I've often seen photos of football fans, all dressed up in costumes with face paint and funny hats and everything, and thought, "And they think science fiction is weird?" But yeah. As long as it doesn't into stalker-obsession, being passionate about something makes life enjoyable, and that's a good thing.

"It's a passion. I have a passion now. Passion is cool."

There are a lot more football fans that don't dress up in funny hats and paint themselves team colours than football fans that do, just fyi. My friends who are football fans are, like me, also SF fans--the two aren't mutually exclusive. :)

The only real difference, I guess, is that sports have to be watched live, but Doctor Who can totally be PVRed. :D

One of my best and closest friends, practically a pseudo-Uncle is a SF writer that I accidentally managed to become friends with! I am passionate about SF and a lot of people who write it are *amazing* (here's lookin' at *you* lol) so yeah I'm passionate. I have a passion.

Also, I'm mostly an adult and spent too much money on books. So there.

This is an awesome essay and you should feel awesome. She typed, resorting to internet phrasing.

I'd hate it if someone I really admired was a dick to me. It's happened on a couple of occasions with comic artists (my home town in Spain holds a convention), but I've found that most authors are really sweet and kind.

May we ask who was the unkind author? Forewarned is forarmed and all that. I do tend to be a bit of a fangirl over things I'm passionate about :P

As it happens, I don't know who the author was and the friend is too classy to say.

Would it be appropriate to mention the friend? Who is also a published author of very good urban fantasy and zombie post-apoc stuff.
