The HP help line has once again proven themselves to be actually helpful. My first laptop was a HP and in order to go on line I had to gear the modem down. (okay that's not technically what I had to do but essentially I was trying to drive a sports car on a goat track and had to get it into a lower gear) The nice young man at the HP help line ( Read more... )

First, I admire your restraint for not going on about Vista. I'm not sure I would have done as well. ;-) (And? Let's hear it for friendly customer service reps!)

Second, I absolutely love that you are listening to Steve Carlson. He's fantastic!

I adore Steve Carlson's music! And there's a new CD coming soon... yay! Although, from the sound of it, it's going to be a lot remixes rather than new stuff but still...

I do too! I'm really looking forward to the new cd and am curious about the remixes. Every time he's redone Pinata Novia, I fall in love with it more, though the live acoustic is probably my favorite. ;-)

When Customer Service reps are good, they're flat-out awesome. Most of my favorite people where I work are in Customer Service. The good ones all have a recognizable personality type: unflappable patience, a sense of the absurd, tact, and an amused interest in Life, The Universe, and Everything. My kind of people.

I admire your restraint in not going on about VISTA. All I'll say is, the programmers I work with hate it with much hatred.

You can turn off the automatic updates. At least, you could with previous Windows operating systems. For all I know, VISTA may have a feature that reached out of the monitor and smacks your fingers if you try.

Unfortunately, turning off the auto update causes other problems. I tried it with XP...

Oh Vista. When I insisted on getting XP on my new comp, my father thought I was crazy for not getting the "most up-to-date" O/S.

Yeah, there's a reason that whenever there's a computer problem he calls me. It's cuz I know what I'm doing, and he doesn't. Newer != better.

I tried getting XP on the new computer but the tech said he couldn't move it over from the old one since MS has this one computer to an OS thing. So far, we're just having the usual shake down problems and I do love the new majong games.

Good to know that HP customer service is helpful. My desktop is a Compaq (which is an HP by any other name...) and I've been reluctant to call them about the peculiar way Vista uses memory. Or at least the peculiar way it does so on this computer...

I could go on about Vista, too. So could everyone I know. But where would that get us? We'd still be stuck with Vista.

My last desktop was a conpaq and it gave me three and a half years of constant service before it started scambling my life. Because it was running 512 of RAM, I figured it was time to upgrade.

I've always found HP Customer Service to be very good. Once, I brought in an out-of-warranty printer to their centre for repair and they fixed it for me without charge anyway. They also told me that next time I need repairs on an HP appliance, I didn't have to lug it down but I could deposit it at my post office and they'd come pick it up.

Now, I'm a Mac user, but what PCs I do own are HPs, because I know that if something goes screwy that I can't handle, they'll be helpful.

The help desk is the reason I look to HP's first. But the next time I upgrade my laptop, I'm still thinking of moving to a Mac.

my 2 cents on the mac khaosworks March 28 2008, 16:57:05 UTC
I moved to a mac at home a few years ago, and am so happy. I had never used one before. If your not computer savvy, they are fabulous. When you add new software or hardware, it just sets up on it's own and works ~ amazing!! The only downside is that some applications (like the Blood Ties game) aren't available on the mac.

...also their customer service is outstanding!!!

Love your books :) Love the Blood Ties show.
