Even though she half expected it, it disturbed Chanmi when she opened HyoYoung's bedroom door to find the younger girl waiting for her. And then it made her smile.

"You're still spying on him," she said, then put her hand up when HyoYoung started to protest. "I know, it's not spying. But you are watching him."

HyoYoung sighed. "He's too hot for my own good," she said. "Come in."

Chanmi closed the door behind her and went to sit at the desk. "So what's your side of the story?"

HyoYoung shrugged. "I overheard him talking to Shim-sunsaengnim, and asked about some of the things he said."

"Must have made you mad, that he wanted to protect you," Chanmi said, deliberately missing the point.

HyoYoung shook her head and her cheeks went pink. "That's where he goes after dinner," she said softly. "Finding his limits. He's very methodical about it. I think this is the only time he's actually kept notes on what happens when he does something with his power."

"I figured you just didn't want to admit you knew where he'd gone," Chanmi said, suppressing her triumph. It wouldn't help now.

HyoYoung nodded.

"So it's not that he wants to protect you," Chanmi said. "What is it?"

"You know what it is!" HyoYoung protested. "He told you!"

"Yes," Chanmi said. "I do. I get it. Sort of. People have thoughts all the time. Thoughts they don't follow up on. So do you."

"But nothing like that!" HyoYoung protested.

"Listen to me," Chanmi said. "You are miserable. Both of you. I'll admit, it surprised me when he told me, too, but HyoYoung, he didn't do it. You have to have faith that he isn't going to do it."

"How do you know?"

"Because I know him," Chanmi said. "He wouldn't do that. He might think it, but he wouldn't do it. All it took for him to completely dismiss the idea was for him to see you. He didn't want to leave you alone. He still doesn't. He's practicing as if you were going to forgive him." Although she didn't think it was something so… optimistic. He acted more like it gave him something to do. It wouldn't matter, actually; the skills were good to have. But Chanmi suspected he practiced like that because of HyoYoung.

HyoYoung slumped. "What do I do?"

"Talk to him. In fact," Chanmi said, "I know exactly what you should do."

"What?"

Chanmi watched the next afternoon when Taewoon walked into the play room. Nothing changed; he found HyoYoung, then went to sit close to where she was. He pulled out his homework, setting it out without spreading it out.

HyoYoung stood up and glanced at Chanmi. Chanmi smiled at her, and HyoYoung smiled back. She gathered up her books and then moved to sit down next to Taewoon. He looked up at her and smiled. She smiled back, and Chanmi sighed as the tension in both of them just… melted away.

Chanmi wanted to stand up and cheer, but instead she did a small fist pump and went back to her book.
