I am intensely frustrated at the aid efforts -- and in some cases, the lack thereof -- in Asia. There are so many different agencies and only a handful have previous experience and contacts in the region. So, while their intentions are doubtlessly sincere their effectiveness is likely to be sincerely limited. Now, if we coulg get all these agencies ( Read more... )

Work together? Wait, who are you again? I've also read about certain aid groups taking in more donations than they have resources to use them.
As for the journalists, all they care about is getting the best story, or the first story, or the most horrific photographs. Some have deluded themselves that getting the truth out to the public helps just as much as the medics trying to save lives, but I think for the most part they just want the money and/or recognition. You have to ask whether the media weighs a good story and humanitarian concerns on a balanced scale? Pah.

The art of journalism has been destroyed by sensational media tactics. No longer is it a matter of who gets the story out there first; it's who gets the most dramatic video, the most heart-wrenching tale.
As for the aid groups, there are some popping up out of nowhere now trying to raise money for humanitarian efforts in the 12 affected countries. No matter that they don't have any experience in the field, no contacts in the region and with various governments, etc. This is why I've been telling people to forget the rest... give to UNICEF or the IRC. With all these aid agencies vying for the same supplies, etc. it is going to raise the price of those supplies thus diminishing the ability of ALL aid agencies to do any good. But, does anyone bother thinking about that logic? NO!
I feel like Cassandra... cursed to always tell the truth but never to be believed.

It's sad because I once really wanted to become a journalist, but now I have no respect for them. I'm sure there are a couple out there with some kind of morals, but overall... they make me sick.

The suckiest thing about journalism is that unless you are the type of person that would do literally anything for a story regardless of the consequences you are limited as to how far and/or where you can go.
