Yes, you did! I can easily see Ianto as that one ray of hope while Jack was being tortured, a shining beacon guiding him home. And to Ianto, Jack's the soothing, protective darkness that hides him from a world that has hurt him so much, allowing him to let down his mask in its safe concealment.

They are each what the other needs.

Exactly. In every essay I've read dark is the equivalent of evil and I don't want that. I don't believe in that, especially in this case, I wanted to show the balance between the two and how both are soothing. And your words make me believe I was successful.
