My light versus your dark
{C}{C}
Jack had been watching Ianto falling apart for many months thinking no one is noticing him. He had been right though that Jack and the rest of his team had failed him in the past and Jack was not ready for a repetition of that particular mistake. They hardly came untouched the first time, a second time he was certain they weren’t going to remain unscathed.
Every morning, for weeks the Captain almost hidden in his office, watched Ianto come in, pale and tired, prepare the coffee, as efficient as ever which wasn’t something that would fool Jack again, make the rounds, standing tall and aloof, clean the HUB, words softly spoken that no one but Jack saw and then he went down to his archive to continue with his work.
As days passed, Ianto became thinner and thinner. It wasn’t until after the fairies, after the cannibals, after Suzie’s return and second demise, after spending a night with a young man who clearly wasn’t aware of what he’d offered and after a whole year of suffering at the hands of a mad Time Lord, whenJack decided that Ianto was not one who he’d let perish at ease.
Closing the door behind him, Ianto ushered Jack in his apartment. Jack took in every little detail that had changed in all the time he was away. There weren’t many, the place was still empty, photographs and memorabilia nowhere to be seen. The change was at the windows; Ianto had the curtains closed, letting no light from the street below come in.
“It was a beautiful night, Jack. Thank you.” Ianto said taking of his suit jacket and silk tie draping them over the back of the sofa carefully. “Would you like a cup of coffee?”
Covering his worry behind a bright smile, Jack let Ianto help him with his coat. “And that’s an offer I’d never say no to.”
“Good.”

Ianto was so worried about Jack. First of all, it was nothing like him to ask Ianto out on a date. And then, it was the subdued demeanour that screamed at Ianto that Jack hadn’t been away on holidays. He wanted to help him, to ask what had happened, but their relationship wasn’t like that. In fact, Ianto had no bloody clue as to how their relationship was like.
He sat on an armchair opposite Jack, stealing glances at Jhim while mostly observing his cup of coffee.
“Don’t you think it’s too dark in here?” Jack asked suddenly breaking the quietness of the moment.
“It was always like this, Jack.”
“Was it? It seems darker, somehow.”
“That’s how it’s been every time you came here.” Ianto mumbled while sipping his coffee. “It helps me to rest.”
“The darkness reminds you of me.”
“No, being in the darkness reminded me of the times we’ve been together here, and it soothed my f…” Ianto stopped mid word. “Me. It soothed me.”

Jack stayed awake that night holding Ianto in his arms, feeling the warmth of another person seeping to his bones. In the bedroom the drapes were not closed and a faint light entered through the window on the left illuminating Ianto’s face.
He and Ianto together was an oxymoron that made absolute sense. The thought of Ianto was part of how he managed to stay sane on the Valiant. His memories with Ianto kept coming back in his hardest suffering, and his wondering over Ianto’s life as he’d been away meant only one thing; there was no way in Hell he was not coming back. To this. To Ianto. Ianto had kept through all the darkness.
And at the same time, Ianto embraced the darkness that reminded him of Jack, the fumbling, the soft whispers, the thrill of not getting got, the shivering and trembling, all in the dark were Ianto’s anchor for as long as Jack was away.
Jack kissed Ianto’s hair finally understanding that the young man who held tight on him was the light in his dark, the balance of the world was between them.
Ianto had come to same conclusion when Jack had shared with him parts of the year that never was.
And as each other’s breathing lulled them to the safety of sleep, they were both content.
A/N: This was so far the most difficult for me to write, and even though I think both Jack & Ianto have light darkness and light in them, I also think that Ianto is Jack's light and the only way Ianto would accept the dark is through Jack. I hope I managed to show that!
