He thinks of Yamapi, first and foremost. His honest "I really liked her" over drinks one night and the tired look on Yamapi's face after he tells Toma that they've broken up. He remembers Yamapi's smile when Toma finally breaks the news that he's going out with Maki, and the enthusiastic (albeit slightly forced) response of "Well, at least I know she's in good hands." He remembers worrying and worrying about his best friend and how he feels like he's backstabbing him.

Then he sees Maki, and it's not that he's forgotten--how can he really? even above it all--but it's more like, he knows what he wants.

Yamapi and Maki broke up amicably--well, a rough estimate of amicable anyway; they still couldn't be in a room alone, but fared well enough when there was more--and there was no broken hearts past that one night.

Toma knows this and remembers it when he sees her. Because she's smiling and she wants to be with him. Even says his name in this voice that makes him feel those butterflies flutter around in his stomach like it's their ( ... )
