in high school, i took a 'natural sciences' class. geology, astronomy, and weather. And i think it illustrates a problem with our education system. Because i can identify gypsum. I know how relatively hard it is. I know (ok, knew) what it's made of. But I didn't know it breaks down clay, so it's good for gardening. I don't know what any of that is good for; just that it is.
The fact that you remember that much from high school science still probably puts you ahead of the curve. I know I got an A in chemistry, for example, but literally the only thing I remember about chemistry is sitting in the very back with my friend, giggling and passing notes about what happened on Buffy that week. :(
most of what i remember from trig is drawing on the side of my paper. I'd taken paper from one of the science teachers--he gave us all paper--and it didn't have lines, so it was perfect for sketching.
I think you remember the important things. obviously giggling and passing notes with a friend = more important than chemistry.
It probably has something to do with how we learned the term. I'm pretty sure my first major encounters with it were without the s, so that's the one I learned. In my head, it's 'easier to say' but that's always relative (even if technically 'keymashes' takes less articulation, it's not like i've never used the vowel+s+m combo before).

LOL. For ages my keysmashes looked like words. It was incredibly confusing.
