some guy at the bus stop kept talking to me in spanish and i don't know why (because he spoke english to the bus driver until he got off). I spent most of the one-sided conversation trying to figure out what he was saying with the remnants of my high school spanish classes and always answered in English, and yet, still with the Spanish. People always speak Spanish to me. Always. And not just Spanish-speakers either. Sometimes I guess it's because to the non-Latin I might look like a Spanish speaker, although the other day I was at the Dunkin Donuts where all the counter people are Mexican (or something) and one of them started to speak to me in Spanish and the one who is always there in the mornings when I come in with my son said to her (in Spanish) "she doesn't speak Spanish" which for some reason seemed really amusing.

But it's true, I don't speak Spanish, though I can understand it perfectly well (though I learned it in high school and college, not because anyone in my family speaks it).

I think it's even funnier when you hear people on the bus speaking rapoid, fluent, slangy Spanish on their cells and then ending the conversation with a completely accent-free "bye bye, I'm pooped, I'm gonna go home and take a bath and crash on the couch to watch tv."

at least you understand it. then again, that might be more frustrating, because you'd know what they're saying but maybe not how to reply. I kept trying to think of how to say "I'm sorry, I don't speak Spanish" in spanish (because at that point I didn't know he spoke English) and kept coming up with Japanese.

i wish I were bilingual like that.

I say it all the the time! Usually followed by, "Do you speak any English?" because for some reason Spanish-speaking people always ask me for directions which I absolutely can't do in Spanish.

Sometimes I tell them "si hables en español, puedo entenderle" if it seems as though they understand English but don't speak it well.

I seriously don't look particularly Latina.

the plural is 'oxen' like 'children.' though we will probably lose the atypical pluralization for ox soon because really, we don't talk about oxen all that often anymore.

It's only apt for お正月 if it's a 年賀状. but my host family sent me christmas cards last year, and they arrived in time for christmas, so. I emailed them new years' cards instead.

it's still the [r]/flap distinction. the point is to get a spread over a variety of speakers in a variety of situations. いつもありがとう。助かりました。both for my fun!time viewing and my research. ^_~
