I think you just pointed out what has been bothering me about all this.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

I think that a lot of people are afraid to say it because they don't want to come off like tight-assed book burners. But the truth is that this puts freedom of speech ---everyone's freedom of speech--totally in harm's way, and I'm sick of it.

Why don't these people just go somewhere ELSE?

And if you don't believe that, consider what priority restoring LiveJournal had when SixApart was hit with the power blackout a few weeks ago.

Dead. Last. Because all the other SixApart services were the paying customers.

Exactly.

LJ is Six Apart's social experiment--and all it would take to shut it all down would be the decision to do so, and the only justification it would need would be a multi-million dollar lawsuit from a bunch of right wing nut jobs....

They would NEVER find ANYTHING to justify the existence of this place if it put them in that much peril.

I got lost. There's something else going on in LJ World, or is this just the ongoing stuff?

I've seriously been considering for awhile now going through and backing up all my stuff, but I have a feeling that would take forever...

LJ/6Apart is quite capable of cutting their losses,as you suggest, but this problem will not going away regardless. If they have the effrontery to cut off 13 million people, do you believe there will not be a significant number among them that will keep this mess going until the sun cools. Remember, LJ is not the only game in town, and some bloggers are more 'connected' than others.

So, whether you support the protests or not, your LJ, just like mine is already at risk. I had a minor melt down over this during the LJ Strikeout debacle. Both Sagittaria and Paul pointed me to LJ backup software. I felt much better after having done it, and probably need to do it again. At least I will offer no hostages to 6Apart.

I would advise everyone, including you Belle, to do the same.

No--I don't believe there will. Because the majority of people in this godforsaken place have the attention span of fruit bats. They will go on their merry way, find another place where they can deposit their pseudo-artistic spooge, and the only people who will have lost will be the people who actually behaved themselves, and conducted themselves like responsible adults ( ... )

I'm sorry, but I can not agree with you, not the least because you underestimate fanfic so badly. While your attitude is understandable, in that you do not value fantasy of any stripe, that really isn't the issue ( ... )

My point is this---

In these cases, grave mistakes have been made on the part of Six Apart--anyone with two eyes in their head can see that. But at the same time, what POINT is there in going to the news page and venting 2408534 posts worth of ad hominem BILE in the face of the people you're trying to persuade? What good does it do to behave like LESS than reasonable adults, writers, artists, whatever in order to prove that you deserve any level of credible consideration?

I have no doubt in my mind that this is an issue that could be solved with a minimum of effort--if anyone was interested in solving it. They're not--they're interested in venting their spleens and yelling about how persecuted they are. Go read the posts, Margo--you'll see what I'm talking about. It isn't ABOUT solving the problem--it's about behaving like a mob.

I wouldn't listen to anyone who spoke to me that way--why in the world would anyone feel any differently than I do?

I don't believe that yelling, and insults, and bad behavior are going to solve the ( ... )

Oh geez, nothing like a pissing contest between fools to ruin it for everyone!

And how do you back up LJ? Someone please let me know. I use it for a personal journal started after my heart attack 4 yrs ago.
