I think it probably has lot to do with the shops fearing the recession, and thus deciding to start extra early in the exhortations of "BUYBUYBUY!!!".

Of course, 99% of people just get really annoyed at it, and some even spend less as a result. But as long as there's that feather-brained 1% that'll go into a shopping frenzy at the drop of a red hat... I guess it's like spam in that.

Personally, I'm with you. I wish they'd STFU until December at least.

this is exactly why Cromwell banned the celebration of Christmas during the Commonwealth - "Christmas" celebrations were starting in early November and lasting till February, and for most that, people were boozed up.

Christmas didn't become an official holiday in Scotland again till the 1960s - 400 years later!

heh - and just why do you think Scotland makes such a big thing of Hogmanay (new year)?

Personally, Christmas doesn't even think about really starting until after two things happen, Thanksgiving, and the Charley Brown Christmas Special. Until then it is all just *noise*.

It annoys the living crap out of me, too - cripes, Halloween hadn't even hit yet and both WalFart and Home Despot had their Christmas stuff up. So far at Linvilla, the only thing we have out so far are the chocolate advent calendars. I haven't been there all weekend, so that might have changed.....
However, I splurged on the new Enya and Loreena McKennit Christmas CD's, and I can actaully listen to them now without the usual Chistmas music related nausea. Loreena's CD is especially nice - it's interesting to hear "The Seven Rejoices of Mary" done to the tune of "The Star of the County Down." ;)

Santa is the last dude in the Thanksgiving parade and its illegal to start any sooner. Sorry, forgot I'm not Empress of the known universe again.

Yeah, everything you said. I think I went ballistic on this last year when there were Halloween, T-day and Xmas things for sale all at the same time.
