Love this. Now, of course, I want to know what's up with Dean. He doesn't sound good. You used to be better at noticing details, Sam.

ETA: Well, that's not fair, you *did* notice, you just let him distract you and didn't find out what's up. Er, Sam.

LOL (well, not really. It’s kinda sad, actually...) Sam’s a little deep in his “normal” life, from which Dean is his “destraction.” That’s the nature of infidelity. It’s never pretty, even if it’s obvious that Sam and Dean are the true couple here. I wanted to play with the idea of what might have happened if Sam had just gone home after that Woman in White hunt, and instead of finding Jess bleeding and burning on the ceiling, she was all curled up in bed just waiting for him. Sam might have counted his blessings, no? Figured he’d dodged a bullet? Or maybe....

Anyway, thanks for recognizing how complicated things might have been if Jess hadn’t (conveniently?) died.

This brought a tear to my eye, Poor Dean- you almost had me convinced we would learn he had a wasting disease. I guess his downslide is lack of Sam, though- it's very sad.

Thank you for commenting. I felt sad writing it. The idea of Sam and Dean apart always makes me intensely sad! I kept thinking that without Jessica’s death and the way she died, Sam might very well have stayed out of the hunting life for good. I think Dean would have wanted that for him, but for himself he would have wanted Sam as his hunting partner, and Sam couldn’t really live without having Dean in his life somehow. The wasting disease is very possible; I feel like Dean needs people in his life, and he would’ve had other relationships, even other partners, but over time the lack of Sam at his side would’ve worn on him and made him ill. I had other thoughs (maybe Dean made a deal ten years ago? Maybe a demon showed him the future if he and Sam stayed together? Hell and Lucifer, the whole shebang? And Dean dealt to keep it from happening...?)

Wow, poor Dean *hugs him* It's like Sam is a vital function and without him, Dean literally just wastes away.

What a painfully beautiful read! The idea that if Jess didn't die, Sam wouldn't have left, and then the knock on effect that's had on Dean is so painful to see. And the twist at the end with the baby just makes it all more the interesting and intriguing.

Thank you for sharing :)

Thank you so much for this wonderful comment! I couldn’t help really wondering about Sam’s resolution to go back to his “normal” life at the end of the Pilot. If Jessica hadn’t burned on the ceiling like his mom, would Sam have really gone back into the hunting life? Apparently the demons didn’t think so...
