Title: First Christmas

Reid worked holidays. He always did. He didn't mind it at all.

He enjoyed this time of the year when the hospital was nice and quiet. There were fewer patients because the patients who could went home, and new patients who didn’t need immediate surgery or treatment waited until after Christmas or even New Year’s to enter Memorial.

He didn’t have to rush during his rounds; he even had time to play a game of chess with an elderly gentleman in Room 405, who once was a prize-winning chess player. Yeah, Reid didn’t mind working on Christmas.

He was a bit worried about his boyfriend though.

When he explained to Luke he would be working the holidays this year, Luke reacted maturely.

"That’s okay, Reid. Maybe next year you can have a few holidays off, but I understand that you already committed yourself to work them this year. I was looking forward to making new memories with you, but we can make them another time."

When Reid finished his shift on Thanksgiving, he was pleasantly surprised. When he walked into his office to grab his coat and head home, Luke was waiting for him.

"Hi Reid. I wanted to save my dessert and share it with you, if that’s okay. I also brought you a lot of food that was left over." Luke put the book he was reading down and got out a picnic basket full of great food. Luke entertained Reid with new Snyder family gossip while he ate a fantastic meal. Afterwards they used two spoons to eat a large pie, then held hands as they walked out together to their cars.

Reid thought that this might have been his favorite Thanksgiving as an adult.

But he hoped Luke would not resent being unable to share the holidays in the traditional way with him.

Reid fell asleep after his shift on Christmas, while thinking about how he could spend some time with his boyfriend. There was no school or work for his man until a couple of days into the new year.

Luke had told Reid he would be there in the morning with breakfast. With Katie and the kid out of town for a holiday trip with family, Reid was hoping for breakfast in bed.

At 9 a.m. Reid heard a knock on the door. When he opened it, he was expecting his boyfriend with a loaf of bread. He did not expect a green wall.

"Little help here, please!" Luke said from behind the green wall. So Reid stepped aside and let the tree in.

"I thought you were bringing breakfast. Is this part of some new diet that I don’t want to participate in?" Reid looked at Luke as he placed the Christmas tree in the middle of the room and walked back out again.

"I’ll be right back." Luke gave Reid a kiss on the cheek as he left him waiting by the door.

Luke returned with a backpack, a box and the picnic basket from Thanksgiving.

"Let me help you with that," Reid said as he grabbed the picnic basket and placed it on the dinner table. When he turned around, he found himself with his back pushed against the wall.

Luke held him tight and kissed him roughly.

"I missed you," Luke softly said in Reid’s ear after he stopped the kiss that made Reid’s loose trousers not so loose anymore.

"I missed you too." Reid pulled his head back and looked at Luke’s happy face. "What’s up with the tree? Did you find it outside in the cold and feel sorry for the poor lonely thing?"

"Nope. I just thought that if we weren’t going to spend Christmas together, we could postpone celebrating until you were free. I brought leftovers and decorations. I hope you like the idea." Luke started to look a little bit less sure of himself.

"When I knew we weren't going to spend Christmas together this year, I thought about last year. My best memories aren't even of the actual day. I loved going with my uncle to chop the tree and present shopping with my mom. I loved helping my grandmother in the kitchen. It’s not just about being there on the day itself, so I thought we could have Christmas today. But if you think it’s a bit silly, that’s okay. I did think of you when I got the tree. It’s a fake with lights already in it. So very practical, but if you don't like it, I’ll put it back in my truck."

"Stop babbling, Luke. I love that you went out of your way to make this a special day for us. I’d be happy with a sandwich and you to just hang out with. But I’ll gladly celebrate Christmas the sequel with you. You Sap." He gave Luke a smack on the lips before he walked over to the picnic basket. "So what did you bring?"

Luke laughed out loud and gave Reid a big piece of brownie. "This will have to be enough to hold you over. We can have a picnic next to the tree."

Reid was very involved with the decorating of the tree. He pointed out where Luke should hang the ornaments so that it would be evenly decorated.

Luke brought out some presents for Reid to open, which was a surprise. He got a candle that Natalie had made. Ethan gave him a drawing and a cookie he wrapped up himself. Faith got him chocolate in the shape of a penis that made Luke moan, "I’m so glad you didn’t have to open that in front of my parents and grandmother." Emma gave him a tin of cookies and a jar of jam. Lily got him a book certificate and Holden gave him two lovely wooden book ends. From Luke, Reid got a silk blue dress shirt and a good quality blue scarf with matching gloves.

Reid got up and came back with two envelopes that he handed to Luke. The first contained a lot of papers. "What’s all this?" Luke asked surprised.

"I want to ask you to be my special person. I want you to have power of attorney for me. If you want to, that is. You don't have to decide today. It just felt like something I needed to do. Open the second envelope; that is more of a present." Reid was trying to avoid looking at Luke, but Luke wouldn’t let him get away with it so easily.

"Thank you so much Reid. I love that you make me feel so important. You don't realize how much this means to me. Thank you."

The second envelope contained a hand-written card from Reid.

Dear Luke.

I work hard and often.

But I promise I will always try to make time for you.

Next year I will take you for a weekend trip to New York. I know you love that place.

We will go see all the sights you want to see and I will not complain about that too much.

I love you.
Reid

Luke pushed Reid down on the floor and kissed him everywhere. “God... (kiss)... Reid.... you are... (kiss)... perfect....(kiss). I love you.... (kiss).... so much.”

They ended up making love on the floor next to the tree.

When they finally got up, Reid found a branch of mistletoe. "Where do you want to hang this?"

"You know what, I don't think we need that. I don’t need a reason to get you to kiss me. And you don't need an excuse to kiss me." To prove his point, he gave Reid another kiss.

"Let's toss it and take a shower together."

They held hands as they walked toward the bathroom together, smiling at each other every step of the way.
