So work has been dismal of late. My new RM (new as in about a year and he still seems to take no interest in the smaller stores and does not understand we do not - and cannot - function like the big ones) actually has caused staff to comment things like "I have never seen a regional/district manager so clearly not give a shit about a store before ( Read more... )

When I left my last job for this one, I made the decision to leave before bonuses came out, though I knew we were due for a pretty decent one. I just didn't want to be in the back of the stampede out of there, I wanted to be out front of the competition. So when I interviewed I said straight out that I was leaving before the bonus, and I wanted some kind of signing bonus. I didn't get all I wanted (and I would have had to pay it back if I left within 2 years, I think it was), but the one I missed out on was the last one that company paid the creatives, and here I've been getting bonuses pretty much every year. (I should look it up to be sure. We've always done fairly well, for the economy, though ( ... )

I will definitely ask about bonus and benefit structures, because it makes a big difference. I just hate asking about money, because truly money is not a huge motivator for me (I'm a people-pleaser, and I want to do the best job I can because I personally strive for the best in myself) but at the same time I know I have some dental work I need to have done, and I can't afford to make less money as a base than I am currently. If they say they need someone sooner than April 5th then I will be up-front that I am waiting on bonus and if they will give me an equivalent signing bonus then I will leave sooner; I also am currently hiring staff for my store so I want to get them trained before leaving, but I don't know if that will make me look better or worse in their eyes... I mena, I personally believe in leaving a place in better shape than I found it, and right now we are definitely struggling at my store for various reasons and I want to get the place in shape for my successor.

I would think that following the "campsite rule" in your profession -- leaving it in better shape than when you arrived -- would make you look like a great catch, if they are any kind of organization.

I don't think I am asking for much, but with the current trend toward minimizing costs I find people are offering insultingly low salaries as a rule here. I can't afford to make less as a base than I am now, even if they don't offer bonuses, and I need certain things in terms of benefits (I need a crown done on 2 teeth and those are terribly expensive, as well as possibly a veneer on my front 2 teeth because wear is causing chipping so dental is a MUST). Vacation is provincially mandated at 3 weeks paid for salaried positions- where I am now I get 4, which I will miss, but I really only *need* 3, so I can go home twice a year & take a long weekend or two ( ... )
