To all you runners...

I'm thinking of trying a new 5K running training schedule.

Any of you with running inclinations familiar with this plan?  http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

I've been trying to jog for 5 minutes at a time (then walk for five), but my endurance doesn't seem to be building at all.  Someone suggested this plan to me saying it built ( Read more... )

i HATE running and have a lot of trouble with it. that said, i run 30 mins (3 miles) 3 times a week, and just signed up for the Army 10-miler in october. when i first started, i could barely run 10 minutes. i think treadmills are hard - if you're on one, make sure it's a good one. any reason you can't run outside?

Oh, I am going to stick to running outside (and going to do some of this evening... gotta enjoy our comfortable spring weather before SC turns into a giant oven for summer). Why I threw in my treadmill hatred I don't quite know. Yesterday was the one and only time I've tried running on it.

Personally, my weight loss has slowed down so much (pathetic crawl and I've still got 20 lbs to go... at a minimum), so I'm looking for ways to kick things back in action by mixing things up. Plus, runners seem to love running so much. I kind of felt left out of the love. Haha.

A 10 miler, eh? That's impressive. Half marathon next? :)

That happens with weight loss - so frustrating, right? I was 2 lbs above my second goal (after meeting my first) at the wedding. Since then I've put on 6 and am now 3 above my ORIGINAL goal. I don't seem to be gaining more, but as soon as I reached goal and loosened up a little, I gained just enough to annoy me.

That said - the treadmill is the devil! And we'll see if I make it 10 miles before I plan anything else :)

Weight loss is a bitch for sure.

I bet you do the 10 with no trouble. We'll be reading about you running marathons before we know it. :)

I think you just have to get used to running. It takes me about 16-17 minutes into a run before I cross over into the "good" zone. The treadmill is harder for me if I try to go as fast as I normally do on a track. So I tend to take the treadmill a bit slower than normal.

You're doing WW right? Try cutting down your carbs a bit... eat the same amout of points but just try and eat less bread or sugary stuff. That should give your diet a kick. Try it for like a week.

I don't really eat much in the way of bread or sugar now (because I'm stingy with my points... haha), but there's no way to cut much in the way of my carbs since I'm diabetic and pretty much eat a set number of carbs throughout the day to keep my body properly fueled (not over, not under). Since I've stopped taking all meds for the diabetes, I've had to be especially dilligent about the amount of carbs I do or do not get and how much exercise I get. It's a crazy balancing act.

Good news is that I lost 2 lbs last night, so my total is 65.4. My leader pointed out to me last night that 15.4 lbs in 14 weeks isn't bad at all.

The treadmill killed my knees, so I think I'm going to avoid running on that. Last night I did the 60 seconds jogging and 90 seconds of brisk walking intervals and did those for about 40 minutes. I didn't think it was difficult at the time (well, it got more and more difficult as time went on), but my legs feel it today. They're not terribly sore, but I can definitely feel it.

One time I nearly missed the last train out of the Loyola campus (and I sure didn't feel like taking a gazillion buses home). I felt like my lungs were on fire and I wanted to cry. It took me two stations (10 mins) to catch my breath. All this to say, I think I should run more often too!

Tell me how it goes!

So far so good, but I'm only on day one. I did find some dude's podcasts page though where he's done a podcast for each week's workout so you don't have to worry with trying to run and time yourself at once. I made mom follow me around with a stop watch last night. Haha. Fortunately she was nice enough to humor me. Turns out, though, that I don't jog, I run and I sprint, but no jog. I think I need to learn how to jog. She said my form for the run and sprints were good though (and she was a runner when she was younger, so... I figure she must know what she's talking about, right?).

Seriously though, the first 60 seconds run/90 seconds walk intervals were easy, but after the 5th one, I was definitely not happy about the running part.

At least you caught the train!
