my stigmatism

Mar 10, 2024 18:41

It's almost Pi Day, which is when my mom passed away, and i am remembering my mom as i start to write this entry because she was the first person who taught me the word astigmatism. Because she had it. And i didn't. The context was a question about why her contact lenses had a line on the bottom and mine did not. Apparently people with astigmatism ( Read more... )

Hugs from a fellow astigmatic. I so hate it, and there is just no way to be completely comfortable. I make do with 3 pairs of glasses...one for reading, one for working on the computer and bifocals for walking, driving and being able to decipher stuff on my phone or the car's screen. Gah'

Reading this comment a couple weeks ago really comforted me, thank you! I have now switched over to a new pair and have persevered... it's still uncomfortable and things are not clear, and my right eye is driving me nuts, but i am persevering for a while till i go back and try again. One change i have made is to go back to reading in bed without glasses, but with both eyes. I wonder if what messed everything up was getting into the habit of lying on my side and reading with only one eye?

Weird! A few years back, a doctor told me I had a slight astigmatism but I don't think she corrected for it (in contact lenses, anyway; I've been wearing non-astigmatism lenses on a full-time basis since 1994, and while the prescription has gotten stronger nothing else has changed). I asked if it was even possible to develop an astigmatism after a person has stopped growing, and she kind of shrugged. I always keep a glasses prescription but never really wear glasses because of the bowing and diving effect, and the feeling that I can only see directly ahead of me. Obviously I dealt with this before I wore contacts but I really don't remember.

Meanwhile, my little sister found out around age 25 that she has a bad astigmatism, and evidently our optometrist growing up never checked for it. But she figured it out when she kept getting into near-collisions when making left turns while driving at night. Went to a new optometrist and got lenses that account for the astigmatism and is in much better shape. After I heard about that, I' ( ... )

I definitely have different prescriptions in each eye. I've known that for over a decade, but the doctors always said that the prescriptions were close enough that it didn't matter too much to just pick the middle value and use them for both eyes ( ... )

That sucks. I'm sorry there's no solution yet. I would keep searching for proper glasses. You shouldn't have to deal with that discomfort ( ... )

I think the idea of using computer glasses is a good one, seeing as i am literally on the computer all day for work, and then after work for even more hours, since my computer is my TV as well. I am not sure how helpful they will be if i can't get the prescription right in the first place, though. Right now i am still struggling to see clearly out of both eyes, even after persevering a couple weeks with this new prescription. I don't know what to do.

The vision situation is stressful even just to read about. Every year I just HOPE my prescription hasn't changed because it is always a toss up as the new prescription working well or not, or giving headaches or blurs, or whatever. I hope you can get it corrected quickly.
