And this is why one of our engineers came *back* to work for us, after leaving for his "dream job" years ago - because we let him just be a senior engineer, fixing bugs and building features. Nobody tries to make him into a manager - he's a great developer, he doesn't want to be a manager

I'm so sorry this might be happening to you. My only comment is that when they tell you they're promoting you, ask for 10 weeks vacation, or a 4-day work week. They might give it to you.
(I was once offered 80% of my previous salary, so I asked to work 80% of a full work week, and damn if they didn't let me work three full days and two half days a week.)
