I feel like it's about time to do another travel update, but nothing much of note happened on the route. For posterity, the route was La Jagüa → Curumaní → Pelaya → Aguachica → San Alberto ( Read more... )

I met you just as you were leaving Berlin (was it?) and heading to China, so I don't know how you felt living in other places. But, despite the pandemic and the oppressive Chinese government, I sensed you were pretty happy in China. You loved the urban environment, the street food, the weather, the local people, and even the Chinese language, despite its difficulty to learn. When you left, it was obvious it was time, but I wondered how you'd feel in Canada. Life in a rural area in the middle of a cold winter was in stark contrast to the bustle of Shenzhen! Throughout your trip through the USA and into Central America, I sensed you were unconsciously comparing everything to China, though you never mentioned it until today.

In this entry, you used the word "home" more than once, and it's funny how one defines that word. It's not the 4 walls of a house that makes it a home. It's the feeling of belonging or an affinity to an area, to an environment, to the local people, to a lifestyle. At least that's how I feel

When i first got to China i spent a lot of time comparing it to Germany too. I think it's pretty normal when you move a lot to look back on places you lived before and try to identify the things you liked and didn't like, and contrast it with current experiences. So, in that respect, i don't think China is special. But i think that the realization i had yesterday was more a sense that i don't feel "done" there. I still have a connection that didn't just disappear after i left. In that sense it is different to places like Australia where i lived over a decade but where i don't feel any emotional link or drive to return ( ... )
