Although i have been slowly working my way out of this latest funk, i have only managed to drag myself out of the house twice in the past week, and only to fetch groceries. My life has completely reverted to lockdown state, which feels apropos, given the recent spike in corona cases ( Read more... )

Oof I opened that Taiwo article and couldn't get past the first paragraph because it immediately flashed me black to my last job and the time the boss asked me to help him finish writing the company's obligatory perfunctory Silicon Valley response to the killings of several unarmed black people. Saying "You're probably the person to edit this, since you're the only black person in leadership."

I'll bookmark it for when I am a little less queasy about that episode.

I'm happy to hear you've found some of my old faves from thebold birdsite. I deleted my account years ago but I do sneak the occasional cheeky peek at a few accounts.

I can't imagine how annoying that must have been, especially when the motivation for the response is something not even related to your job or industry ( ... )

You're not in a tropical climate anymore. This time of year is the time to hibernate and navel gaze.

I'm the same with podcasts. A lot of it is waffle and could be far more condensed. But I never sit down to listen to one, it's always something I have on when I'm washing the dishes or folding the laundry, so i'm not losing any time to it ( ... )

I don't actually have a Twitter account, but i have a few accounts bookmarked that i poke my head in on now and again. I prefer ones that don't post too much, something more like how blogs used to be. I think that's a way to consume stuff over there that doesn't get you too caught up in the day-to-day, minute-to-minute drama ( ... )

Be careful with some of those black conservatives. They seem to have personal vendettas. McWhorter was a prof at Cal when I was at Cal and it is blatantly obvious that he is mad at black people because he got picked on for being a nerd. He is a nerd. A giant nerd. But he should just go to therapy and het over it. Every time black people have collectively tried to do anything for ourselves at scale, white people have burned it to the ground. IT IS HISTORY. Of course. racist capitalism will let a few through but people (,black ot white) who claim the neoliberal lie of personal responsibility for economic empowerment are full of shit. Most people who are successful are BORN CLOSE TO THE GOAL. When they kick the ball in, they fancy themselves top footballers and tell everyone else that they need to focus on training. Fuck that. Eat the rich and their minions.

Haha, i'm glad you mentioned that about McWhorter because i picked up on that too. He's kinda got this massive chip on his shoulder about being smart but not cool. Loury just comes across as selfish to me, like the typical libertarian "i got mine so screw all y'all". Steele i find a bit more interesting. He's obviously a very "personal responsibility" conservative, but occasionally he quotes Malcolm X, and sometimes i can feel a bit of a parallel with some anarchist writers who talk about setting up grassroots organizations to solve problems inside the community ( ... )

I've never listened to a podcast because I assume they're inefficient, but it might be worth trying to listen to one while I'm doing something else.

I often heard from Americans that they like to listen to podcasts in the car. Because i don't drive that was never really an option for me, but cooking is a similar thing i suppose. For me, if i listen to music that i like, i get too absorbed and the music can distract me from focusing on what i'm supposed to be doing... but a podcast is a bit more like having a few people chattering in the back, or at the breakfast table - you can kind tune in and tune out and it's fine. Now i just need to find some good ones!
