Facebook, which was becoming a bit of an outlet for me to reach out during the lockdown in China, is now back on my shitlist. I have too many friends who, perhaps in a state of shock, have decided to shame everyone who isn't welcoming authoritarianism with open arms ( Read more... )

Word. Word. Freaking word.

In Northern Virginia, where I have the great misfortune to live right now, the Mommies are banding together to harass and shame and give 1 star on Yelp to all businesses that haven't closed down, rather than simply not patronizing those businesses. (They'll be the ones bitching in 7 months when little Maximus wants his birthday party there but it's permanently closed, though.) I wonder how long the fervor will last.

I've been thinking maybe this will spark some change, get people to consider waste and pollution and human rights more seriously. Doesn't sound promising. Sweden has been slower about shutting down, though it is moving that way this week. I don't want to be out, and a part of me is glad to see people reacting, but it does feel reckless. I wonder what the government is going to do for people fucked over by all the regulations.

I feel so skeptical about this. A lot of people are writing thinkpieces like "this will change everything!" But so far in my life every time i thought there was a "this will change everything" moment, all that happened is the rich got bailed out and the right-wingers got back in power and actually nothing changed, not really. We'll see. It's still early for Europe and North America, in a couple months i think we'll have a better idea how countries outside China deal.

And, for fuck's sake, i really hope that everyone who's currently all-in for this whole "we all need to sacrifice a little for the good of the many" schtick remembers their new-found philosophy when the outbreak passes. How about banning internal combustion vehicles so that the emissions stop killing millions every year? Taxing foods that lead to diabetes and heart disease? Welcoming those fleeing poverty and persecution? There is a very long list of shit the world should be doing, if people actually cared about the lives of other human beings.
THIS A THOUSAND TIMES THIS!!!!!

I stopped using FB in 2017 then Twitter then Instagram. I had LinkedIn on my phone until a few days ago when people there got aggravating with all their "brilliant" career advice. I'm using my time to be on Duolingo to learn Portugese instead

I have a love/hate relationship with LinkedIn. On one hand, it's a great résumé for me, because employers can see that i have references from colleagues who have gone on to great things at FAANGs. On the other hand, some of the stuff people post is so banal. Like, y'all not Seth Godin, you know? I prefered LinkedIn when it was just a way to see where my ex-colleagues moved on to and touch base with people privately to talk about job opportunities.

It's also funny to see the people who i coached years ago as junior devs now become directors and C-levels and whatnot. Makes me think i kinda wasted my life. Perennial underachiever is me.
