Why do people need to spit so much? Is that a virus thing or a Chinese thing?
That’s interesting about the subway passes. After 9/11 we saw so much erosion of presumed rights, and increase in government tracking, and I suppose it’s only natural to expect the same after this.
Spitting is a Chinese thing. I think it is related to some kind of superstitious belief that keeping phlegm inside your body upsets the balance. From what i hear it used to be widespread in the 70s and 80s, but nowadays it's only really older people and rural/working class people who still spit a lot. Bus passengers tend to skew toward that demographic, so you see it fairly frequently - especially in small towns and the outer suburbs.
Yes, i am worried that when things finally go back to normal, the government might still keep some of these things in place. Since i have lived here things have only gotten more authoritarian, not less, so i am skeptical they will ease it back.
It's really wonderful, it ties together the classic style Star Trek that went out of fashion 20 years ago with the more gritty, down-to-Earth sci-fi that people enjoy today. There still seems to be a thread of social justice going through it, which is comforting in these times.

My mother passed on Mother's Day, this past year and that's the only reason I'll remember the date as well. I only wish I had a mountain to make the memory more peaceful.
I've never heard of people spitting out a window on trains, but you are right about people who panic and cause more problems for the public.
