Has anyone on my flist bought a scuba mask recently that required prescription lens? If so any advice? Has anyone had experience with the pre-made lenses that they insert into the frame? 10 years ago they were gluing the lens on the inside of the mask and I don't remember having any troubles seeing out of the mask ( Read more... )

I personally do NOT like prescription scuba masks. they never work as well as they claim. Even had a opthamologis to make me a pair. Tried both kinds glued in ones & then the ones fitted into the frames ( the way they make glasses). I find I have clearer vision w/a plain old regular mask & my contacts.

I've got bad nearsightedness and astigmatism, so I had a custom mask made (the kind where an opthamologist grinds it to your prescription) and the results were excellent. I could see very clearly. I'm very wary of pre made lenses generally because they never seem to have ones that fit my prescription exactly, and a prescription that's slightly off drives me crazier than not being able to see at all.

I've got pretty bad near-sightedness (as in I've got maybe 9 inches of clear eyesight) and when I purchased a mask (like 10 years ago lol) I had the lenses glued into a regular mask. Yes, the prescription is slightly off - especially as my eyesight gets worse, but I can actually see where I'm swimming and I don't find it annoying to readjust between my glasses and the mask. So I guess it'd depend on your tolerance for those differences?

Hi, sorry, don't know anything about scuba masks (good luck) but I did have LASIK surgery about 7 years ago. NOTE - the technology may have changed, consult a doctor ( ... )

Hi,

thanks for sharing your experience with Lasik surgery. I don't know too many people who got it in real life and it seems kind of scary. I think if someone was messing with my eyes, I wouldn't want to go with the cheapest option either.
