It's my day off

and my comics arrived! And it's hot out. And humid. And I was thinking of going to get my hair cut, but right now my plans involve reading me some Hellboy and Birds of Prey. And venturing out tomorrow, when it's supposed to be ten degrees cooler but stormy. Whatever, a trade off. I'd rather get wet than unbearably sweaty, which probably makes no ( Read more... )

Just a note: I think the one film-based medium that I've seen that's really made an effort to show how different and interesting L.A. is (if just visually) is the series Life. Probably not up your alley as it's a procedural, but if you want a boat-load of pretty, it's a good series. This picspam gives a vague insight into some of the establishing/light shots in the show.

I do love that actor, and I hear awesome things about the show. I'm not much of procedural girl, sadly, whether police or medical.

BUT OMG was that pretty! I may have to tune in for that aspect alone!

Oh! And here is a second series of picspam.

And I honestly think you might like the show. It's pretty much a crap procedural to begin with (really, they're BAD at writing mysteries) but the character stuff is really, really top-notch. At least, through season 1. Season 2 is a little... uneven. That being said, season 1 (and I would recommend tracking down the ahem versions as the music is 1000x better and that REALLY contributes to the series... actually, if you want to send me a P.O. Box or whatnot, I can post you a copy of the ahem season 1 dvd's free) is an amazing example of what filmaking in television COULD be and what character continuity COULD be.

And the best part? Damian Lewis is pretty awesome, but the absolute stunning revelation of the show? Is Sara Shahi. ;)

Oh hai, do you need book recommendations about an interesting LA?

Sure! I have not been much of a book reader lately but I need to get back into that. WTF is up with not reading books that lack pictures, anyway? I have no idea. I blame the internet.

But this would be excellent!

Ahem. /me cracks knuckles and neck.

Let's rock:

Like a Hole in the Head by Jen Banbury: While killing time at a used bookstore, the protagonist accidentally sells a very specific book and has to traverse L.A. to get it back, all the while musing on the Southern California life and meeting tons of L.A. people.

Everybody Smokes in Hell by John Ridley: Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarsh! And loveless. Haaaaaaarsh! And loveless. Stolen demo tape, hitman, L.A.

The Big Bamboo by Tim Dempsey: Professional schizophreniac and serial killer Serge A. Storms takes on Hollywood.

Spook Country by William Gibson: Only parts take place in L.A., but they're really good parts.

I have an obsession with books that actually do L.A. justice in a place sense. I've read a lot of bad ones, but I'm still looking.

Robert Crais's LA Requiem. The only book of his I've read, but apparently---as though you couldn't tell from the title---that is his Setting. Epitomizes so many crime novels that made Los Angeles a staple of "hard-boiled", but really utilizes the whole environment, especially the surrounding countrysides.

Spook Country is good for all sorts of reasons, though I remembered liking Pattern Recognition better.

I had the day off, too. I did laundry and hung it out on our new clothesline. Then I went out to run errands and forgot my wallet at home. *facepalm*

It's horrible. I function by not going outside when I don't absolutely have to.

San Diego was humid too, but we don't have that lovely breeze that makes it all okay. Instead, it's just MUGGY AND HORRIBLE.
