Here is a translation of a magazine interview (gomen m(__)m I'm not sure which magazine). I've attached a retouched version of the picture in the article (looks vintage n_n). Might I add, he looks incredibly good here. But then again, it's hard to make this man look bad. XD
"Yatterman no.1 is a life-size hero for me; we are equal in height. The fact that he can't quite get the moves right and how he's not always all there are actually reasons why you should find him charming. I tried to preserve that aspect of his character in the movie." Although a hero, Yatterman seems more like the average Joe. He doesn't quite seem to completely fit the bill. But this trait echoes Sakurai-san's own life: a newscaster one day, and a goof the next in variety shows. "People tell me I look like an anime character. I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not... but it seems like one, so, oh well. [laughs] But as for my role, I did use that to my advantage and really played out that anime-like quality."
This approach succeeded, as the original anime's boldness and energy transformed into a powerful and action-filled movie. "I took this opportunity to delve deeper into the making of an anime series, and I thought Yatterman was probably created by grown adults who just wanted to poke fun a bit. So early on in the making of this movie--though it wasn't in the script or anything-- I decided to mimic a Yatterman no.1 move. The director thought it was absolutely hilarious. Having been reassured that this is the way the director wanted to take this movie, I definitely got to spread my wings and really have fun playing my part." Variety shows and interviews alike, he always seems to sense the situation and the moods of the people around him, which he then portrays upon himself. This may be the reason why he was fit to play Yatterman. "Just as some people still call me 'Bambi', I'd love it if I were walking down the street and someone refers to me as 'Gan-chan', too."
