Now I remember!

I remember why I stopped reading the Order of the Phoenix book...Harry's an annoying, whining little brat in the beginning. I mean, come on, after all he's been through you'd think he'd show some signs of maturity. But. No.

Does he get any better? I'm beyond the 100 page mark and really tempted to toss the book at the wall. Something I never do ( Read more... )

I take advantage of bad books as an opportunity to let my mind wander while my eyes are occupied with the text. Keeps me from getting distracted, which gives the chance to get some serious plotting or worldbuilding done, for instance. :)

Wish I could do that. lol. All well, I guess it's a lesson in what not to do when writing. If I try to find a bright side to it all.

I haven't read Order of the Phoenix since Half-Blood Prince came out so I don't remember it well, but as far as general quality goes I remember OOTP as being poorly-written, poorly-plotted, and angsty. So no, given what I remember, it does not get better. Maybe a bit, but 15 is definitely Harry's Year of Angst.

But on the plus side, it makes the decidedly mediocre (IMO, anyway...at least it had fewer structure and plot problems) HBP seem absolutely wonderful by comparison.

I was afraid of that.

I'm tempted to borrow HBP from someone to read instead of buying it after reading this one...but that seems stupid since I have all the other ones and will probably by the last one on the day it comes out.

Yeah, he's muy angsty in that book, though 15 is the age of angst in general so at least it fits.

HBP was better. My favorite is still the third one, over all.

Don't read OotP for Harry, read it for everyone else, including Hermione. ;-) And Kreacher.

that's a little hard to do as it's all filtered through his pov.

This is true, and his PoV got annoying on me in the book, too. Still, there's some good in it, despite that bit.

Not that I disagree with you in principle--Harry IS an annyoing, whining little brat at the beginning of OotP. But at 15, after all he's been through, that's exactly what I would expect him to be.

Of course, that doesn't make it easier to read.

At 13 maybe, at 15 I'd expect a bit more maturity. It's not like this is all new to him.

On the other hand, I do find myself wanting to smack most teenagers over the head.

Heh. See, 15 is when my sister shaved her head and decided that NO ONE UNDERSTOOD HER. (She, too, was prone to capslock.) You may have grown up around exceptionally mature 15-year-olds, or I grew up around exceptionally immature ones!
