The really good part is that I'm completely comfortable while SITTING. It's just walking or standing that becomes excrutiating...and since I'm spending seven days sitting in a chair scoring essays...I'm okay with that...especially now that I've borrowed a chair so I can get around with less pain.
I'm going to keep on exercising because I figure if it makes it worse, it won't be dramatically so, and it's good for me regardless. And the stretching (I keep doing the lying down with my butt against the wall and legs up on the wall...and that helps) is helping, I just have to do it every time I walk more than 50 feet...and, as I said, sitting down makes it all okay withing 2 minutes.
I never realized how much goes into scoring those exams! 51 essays is insane--no wonder you were falling asleep. I bet there was lots of 17 year olds BS-ing about Shakespeare and good old Cardinal Wolsey!
*speaks from experience* :)
Good luck with the rest! Enjoy the weekend and getting to meet some of your LJ friends!
Eta: Oh god, I hope your leg and back are feeling better soon!
It's actually a delightful thing. It's grueling, but really great.
There are teams...and each team reads only ONE of the three questions. There are HUNDREDS of us here for this set of tests (French Lit and US History and....um...something else) are here in L'ville. Other exams are being scored in Daytona Beach and San Antonio and the like.
But yeah...around 250 folks, scoring 8 hours a day for 7 straight days to get ONE question on ONE exam done...and a team similar for each question other than that. And the table leaders are here three days earlier to create the scoring guide and identify sample essays.
The GOOD thing is that my back is not bothering me at all when I'm sitting...and I am here TO sit...I scored 115 papers today (51 yesterday), and am hoping to up that to maybe 140 or 150 tomorrow. :-)
So...it could be MUCH worse, and having the borrowed chair is helping so that the walk TO the convention center is better.
Sounds like the trip is going well, apart from the back / calf pain - I hope you manage to get to see someone about that - it sounds painful. *hugs* Good thing they have a wheelchair although I hope this isn't something you have to put up with for long. :(
Have fun meting up with LJ buddies!!! That should make you smile with GLEE!
The wheelchair option is fantastic to have; it means tiring less and it WORKS...well...as well as one on hard plastic rims with no rubber tires can! :-) I DO miss the sporty, low-profile Quickie we have in our house that has inflatable tires, rubber-coated rims, good coasting distance...when I've used that it is MUCH less work than this one that has no traction!
cheekygal came up and we went out to get Panera and OMG I barely made the 3 block walk. I was REALLY in pain by the time we got there. Back was a downgrade (going didn't seem like uphill, but, apparently....) and not as painful. I just have trouble with my back when I stroll or stand. Is what it is, and is manageable. I know the work-arounds, and if I'm running or pedaling (something that allows my hips to stay square) I don't have nearly as many problems. I can prop up with pillows in bed, lie on my side, etc.
Yikes so do you find you need a wheelchair often? Does that mean this injury is a recurring event? Cos that sounds painful :( Is there nothing you can do for the back (?) pain - physio / exercise / surgery?
Glad you had fun meeting up with LJ friends at least :)
I don't *need* one often, really, but I do a) find it fun, and b) find that strolling at the zoo or at museums REALLY aggravates my back, and so it's easier just to bring the chair along for that. I think it worries my husband, who thinks it's all weight, and it's mostly an injury from 1999 plus two babies 10 1/2 months apart

Sorry re: leg and back. When I have had a back spasm before only thing that stops it is a serious massage. Get dh on the case when you get home!
