I never notice new tech until it's used for evil on Doctor Who

So, a year or two ago, I'd seen a few folks walking down the street, talking to their invisible friends, and I'd noticed several of them with headset thingies that had wires that hung down the front of their shirts to connect to a cell phone on their waist. I had seen one or two with the little earpiece kind, but had no idea what they were called ( Read more... )

And, like with New Car Syndrome, suddenly the things were EVERYWHERE. I saw them more and more and more all the time. It was both disconcerting and amusing.

*chuckle* It actually kinda did work that way. Like most mobile phone features/accessories, Bluetooth earpieces hit it big in England before here. And here, they hit the critical-mass price drop not long after Chicago passed the ordinance prohibiting talking on a cellphone while driving, unless you're using a handsfree. (We still have the kind with the cord. I'm valiantly resisting the Bluetooth lemmingness because I only use it in the car, the cord kind is perfectly serviceable, and I don't need to be wasting the money. But every once in a while I think "It looks so handy!")

As for the teleconferencing thingie, I'd never seen one before, but assumed that was its purpose just because the design fits in with the kind of gadgets I'm used to seeing for presentations, etc. Just a corporate-environment thing, I guess.

Yeah, I'd never seen the teleconferencing thing until that scene...and then not IRL until the day I posted this.

And it's nice to know that the sudden surge in the bluetooth toys really WAS shortly after I'd have seen cybermen stuff. Yay! I'm not-crazy (in that particular way...today). :-)

Hee. We have speaker phones like that at work so I did know what they were in the ep and took them for granted. So when the poison gas spewed out I was a bit shocked. Because I thought they were just speakerphones.

That's fantastic! I never realized they looked like real thing, and if I'd known, I'll be you're right that it would have been all the creepier. I'd never seen one till the day of this post...and so, for me, the truly creepy thing was seeing one in my SCHOOL!!!

Totally okay (see profile page friending policy)!

Good to meet you. Please know that you are welcome to come up to Chicago any time and stay with us for a week or two while you investigate the area. We live VERY near Midway and could easily pick you up from there, and there are Amtrak trains that come straight to the city from, say, St.L. We also know a number of folks who are actively auditioning in the Chicago theatre scene and can tell you what sites/papers/etc. to check.
