I never notice new tech until it's used for evil on Doctor Who

So, a year or two ago, I'd seen a few folks walking down the street, talking to their invisible friends, and I'd noticed several of them with headset thingies that had wires that hung down the front of their shirts to connect to a cell phone on their waist. I had seen one or two with the little earpiece kind, but had no idea what they were called. Then, in the space of the two hours that was "Age of Steel" and "Rise of the Cybermen" the little earpiece thingies became Those OMG EVIL Cybus Things That Make People Into Cybermen (well, not exactly, but, definitely BAD).

And, like with New Car Syndrome, suddenly the things were EVERYWHERE. I saw them more and more and more all the time. It was both disconcerting and amusing.

Today I walked into our (recently redecorated) school conference room. And there, sitting on the table, was a creepy three-or-four-legged roundish flatish thing that I'd only ever noticed once before--on the table in the cabinet room in "Sound of Drums" when the roundish thing spouted a cylinder which then spewed poison gas and killed the entire cabinet while the Master grinned and watched.

Have I mentioned the "disconcerting" part? I told a couple of friends, and as I described the Evil Gadget, they were like, "Yeah, a speakerphone." And I was all, "THAT is what speakerphones look like nowadays????" I'd thought the thingies on the cabinet table looked menacing and fully expected them to be some weapon and was totally surprised when none of the ministers seemed fazed. I had no idea those things existed.

And now there's one in my school.

Also? Open House/Parent Night ROCKS like a rocking thing. I've made connections with several families who have adoptions in the family and talked with parents of several of the kids with IEPs and at least half a dozen parents talk about how their kids come home glowing about my class or it's the highlight of their day and one just thanked me for being me...it was great. I. Love. My. Job.

life is weird, tech, parent night, work, dw
