Gun Hand

If I had to say so myself, I was pretty good with a gun. Hardly marksman material, but I hit what I aimed at, and that’s an important thing when you’re a cop. But, for all my skill, I’ve never felt completely comfortable with a gun in my hand.

There was a big part of me that wished being a cop was like the old shows I used to watch, Andy Griffith and Adam-12, where no one ever got hurt and everything was resolved in under an hour. The rest of me knew that would never happen, knew that sometimes things took weeks or months, and ended in bloodshed, one way or another.

There had been a murder almost five months ago, not the usual gang violence wrong place/wrong time killing, but a cold and calculated execution. The captain himself had worked the case and it had been all hands on deck for a long time, following lead after lead, interview after interrogation, until tonight and a tip that led two dozen of us to Philadelphia’s warehouse district.

I was up high, crouched on the fire escape of the building next door. My night vision had been good before I’d become a vampire, but it was even better now, and I could see two of the target building’s entrances from my vantage point. Howell was somewhere below me, lurking in the shadows with his own gun drawn, in a better position to engage a dangerous suspect than I was.

We’d all been issued earwigs, and I listened to the continued updates from the detectives, creeping up to the building and preparing to strike. My gun felt heavy in my hand, but I was ready to use it, if I had to.

My earwig crackled, three sharp clicks sounding the signal to stop all extraneous noise and motion. Then, the captain’s voice called, “Now! Now! Now!” and everyone moved.

THE END
