Fountains of Joy

Despite it being an unseasonably warm May, I had my uniform shirt buttoned at the cuffs, gloves tucked into my belt only because I was using my fingers to apply another layer of sunscreen, factor 100, onto my cheeks.

“Don’t forget your ears,” said Howell, from beside me. He was wearing the light-weight summer uniform shirt, enjoying the afternoon sunshine.

I glared at him as I dabbed some sunscreen onto the tops of my ears, but my glare wasn’t half as good as his. I’d have to keep practicing.

Normally, we were never on duty this early in the day- the one possible upside of vampirism was getting first crack at the night shift- but there were four people out with the flu, and pretty much everyone was pulling double. Any other day, I might have gotten out of this horrible outside work, only partly my condition but mostly because I was one of the few cops who didn’t detest filing with every fiber of their being, but only the captain was left behind at the precinct this afternoon, and we were pretty sure he would be stopping by at some point, too.

On the other side of the pedestrian walkway, the fountains cycled on, shooting geysers of water eight feet high above the street, just as another roaring sound could be heard over them. Dozens of school children came racing down the pavement, waving their now-empty backpacks and most of them screaming and hollering in joy. As one, they hurtled toward the fountains, jumping into the spray and flinging water at one another.

I took a step backward, out of the line of fire, and turned to smile wryly at my partner. “Don’t you love the last day of school?”

THE END
