Breakfast for Two

The house was entirely too quiet for a Saturday, Jenny thought.

Any other weekend would have found her eight-year-old daughter, Abby, blaring cartoons on the TV and chattering away to whichever of her parents she thought was still in earshot.

Today, however, was the Girl Scout father/daughter 'Wilderness Adventure Day'. Abby had been up since the crack of dawn in anticipation, completely unconcerned by the fact that her parents barely answered her until they'd had their first cups of coffee.

Gibbs had needed three cups before Jenny could get him and Abby out the door, and she had double-checked that he had an entire thermos of the stuff safely tucked in his knapsack.

After all that commotion, Jenny found the house oddly quiet as she shut the door behind them and went to clean up the coffee.

Then, she heard loud footsteps coming down the stairs and into the hall.

"Morning, Mom."

Jenny smiled as ten-year-old Tony plopped himself down at the kitchen table.

"Good morning." Jenny leaned back against the counter, a cup of coffee in her hand. "Looks like it's just you and me for breakfast, kiddo."

Her son blinked at her, not quite awake yet. "Huh? Where're Dad and Abby?"

"Their father/daughter field trip, remember?"

"Oh, yeah," said Tony. "Abs has only been talking about it all week. Did you make sure Dad has enough coffee?"

Jenny laughed. "Very sure. So, what's it going to be for breakfast?"

"I can get it myself," Tony insisted, sliding out of his chair.

"Well, how 'bout I pour you some orange juice?" Jenny offered.

"Okay, Mom."

She could hear Tony moving around, getting a bowl and spoon, then opening a box of cereal. When he opened a second box, Jenny turned. "What are you doing?"

Tony poured Lucky Charms over the Captain Crunch already in his bowl, then reached for the box of Cheerios. "There's not enough left in any of the boxes," he explained. "So I'm putting 'em all together."

Jenny sat down across from him, both hands around her coffee mug. "That's very... logical," she said, managing to keep a straight face.

"It is," Tony agreed happily. He reached for a fourth cereal box. "Plus, when you add the Cocoa Puffs, it turns the milk puke green!"

Jenny finally laughed at that. "Of course it does," she said, then grinned. "Why don't you save some for your father?"
