No Place Like Home
"Hey, Tony, pass me another file?" asked Jimmy, looking over at his friend, who frowned for a moment, confused before handing him the folder.
It was three in the morning, and the only hope of a lead was buried somewhere in the boxes of files around them. Jimmy looked around at the others- Ziva, working steadily through her share of the files; Abby, beside her with a folder in one hand and her caf-pow! in the other; Agent Gibbs and Dr. Mallard at the team leader's desk, talking softly over another file; and the desk McGee had just left to make another coffee run.
Jimmy rubbed the bridge of his nose where his glasses rested, and turned back to his own work, stopping when he caught Tony looking at him.
"What?" he asked.
"You're not going to leave us, are you, Jimmy?" Tony asked, for once completely serious.
Jimmy frowned. "What? I'm not going home, we've got a dozen boxes still to look through."
Tony shook his head. "I don't mean tonight. I mean... you've only got a couple more weeks of med-school, and when you pass your exams- don't give me that look, Palmer, because you will pass- you could get a job anywhere. You don't have to be the autopsy gremlin anymore."
He sounded so sincere that Jimmy couldn't suppress a smile. "Like you'd stop calling me that anyway," he teased, getting a smile in return, then added more seriously, "You don't really think I could leave, do you? I plan on being the autopsy gremlin for a long time."
Tony beamed at him. "Good," he said firmly, then brightened. "Oh, look, McCoffee's back!"
He jumped up to help McGee pass out cups, and Jimmy laughed as they immediately started bickering.
There really was no place like home.
