Sore Losers
The Phillies lost the World Series, and the city went crazy.
Well, maybe not the whole city, but enough of it that every cop was called in for crowd control, including Howell and me.
I hadn’t expected the riot gear.
“Sir,” I began, taking the bullet-proof shield with shaking hands. “I don’t know if I can…”
“Don’t engage the rioters, Jones,” my partner said. He strapped on his Kevlar vest, then checked mine. “Keep your head down, and watch for uninvolved civilians. Concentrate on getting any injured out of harm’s way.”
I nodded, gratefully- that, I could do. “Yes, sir.”
