Lurking
“Okay,” I said. “I don’t even watch horror movies and I know this is a bad idea.”
Howell, predictably, didn’t turn around. “Less chatter, Jones.”
I kept my weapon and flashlight in tight grips, one wrist over the other, as we swept the woods for clues.
“The suspects were spotted two miles from here, half an hour ago, sir. They can’t hear us.”
“No,” he agreed. “But I can.”
“Sir,” I protested. “Seriously. Horror movies. We have no idea what kind of horrible monsters are lurking around here.”
“Like maybe a werewolf and a vampire?” asked Howell, deadpan.
I grinned.
