Coffee & Doughnuts

The Vampire Council had never made any secret of the fact that they never wanted me. All of the other vampires I’d met- admittedly, not that many, unsurprisingly- had been terrible snobs. Most humans they Turned had to go through a lengthy application process before they were deemed worthy to be children of the night.

The only exception seemed to be for those who had been Bitten by rogue vampires- and I was the first of those in over a hundred years. Personally, I thought they were just peeved at me for breaking their record, on top of them thinking that I was completely unqualified to join their elite circle.

I wondered, sometimes, what would have happened if I hadn’t taken that shortcut through the alley coming home from the library that night, if I had seen the shadow following me or managed to get away in time.

But I always dismissed those thoughts immediately. If I hadn’t been Turned, I would never have become a cop, a job I love and never knew I wanted. I’d never have met Howell, my partner and the closest thing to a family I’d had since my parents died.

I watched our patrol car’s reflection in the polished marble of a skyscraper’s façade as we drove past it. “Hey, sir,” I said, with a sigh. “Are we on duty for next Saturday night?”

Howell glanced sideways at me, keeping most of his attention, thankfully, on the road. “No. Why?”

I scowled to myself. “Council meeting.”

As a vampire, even an accidental one, I was required to attend at least one meeting of the local Vampire Council every few months and after the last one I’d missed, I had received a very politely-worded demand to show my face at the next one.

Howell stopped at a red light. “Want me to come with you?”

I smiled, despite myself. Vampires and werewolves were not in the epic, centuries-long war most humans seemed to think we were, but it was true that the two groups generally disliked each other, a lot. Howell and I were the exception, and I knew that his offer was sincere.

As much as I would have loved to walk into that stuffy, gilded Council chamber with Howell at my side, I figured I should wait until I really needed him. “That’s okay, sir,” I said. “But maybe…”

“Spit it out, Jones,” said Howell, which would have sounded grumpy to anyone who didn’t know him.

“Maybe you’d have a few minutes to have a coffee with me, afterwards? Not, you know, anything fancy. Actually, anything but fancy would make me feel better after one of these. It’s like they practice making me feel inferior! They don’t approve of anything in my life, not my apartment, not my fashion sense, especially not my job, and that’s just-”

“I’ll pick you up afterwards,” my partner interrupted. “Coffee and doughnuts.”

“A proper cop meal,” I said, grinning. “Which will be great, since I always wear my dress uniform to these meetings.”

Howell let out a bark of laughter. “That’s my girl.”
